Havana is a heady mix of sun, sea, history, and vibrant Caribbean culture. The city is an eclectic combination of old and new, calm and hustle-bustle, all accompanied by the soundtrack of the jazz notes that drift out of the open doors of bars, and the dull rattle of the engines of the 1950s cars. Havana is always hot and humid so this guide will help you to make the most of what the city has to offer without trying to do too much!

Kate O's City Tips

  • A cheap way to get around is to take a fixed-route taxi. Some taxis drive the same route all day (like buses) and cost a fraction of the cost of a private taxi. Ask your hotel/hosts for routes.
  • Internet is not widely available in Havana, but virtually all hotels have it and will usually offer access to non-guests for a fee.
  • Cuba has two currencies: CUC (peso convertible) and CUP (peso). The CUC is generally used by tourists and for tourist attractions, but things in CUP are much cheaper.
  • When in Cuba, you can either exchange money at CADECAs, or take it out of ATMs. There is a supplementary charge for exchanging US dollars, Mastercards are not widely accepted.

Coppelia is a Cuban institution. It doesn't serve the best ice cream in the world but it is hugely popular with the locals who will wait in line for over an hour. Plus, the space-themed architecture has made the ice-cream parlor a popular place for shooting films, and makes a novel backdrop for a refreshing treat.
