It is beautiful there. However, not sure it is worth coming that far out of your way to see. Maybe wait until your travels bring you closer.

If you like beautiful scenery, especially of historical significance, this is well worth the trip. Stop at the national park/museum, then take the short drive up to the lookout point. It's a short, easy walk from the parking lot to the overlook where you can see portions of three states.

Yes two hours out of your way to see vistas from years ago. The gap is restored back to the way it was when Boone came through. The routes in and in, while not interstate, are four lane. Worth your detour.

Absolutely! You won't walk in a rose garden and truly smell the roses unless you get off the interstate.

To trade places - we're going to Quebec City in 2 weeks and are stopping at Cooperstown for the baseball Hall of Fame. Will do New Brunswick, Maine, Massachusetts & Connecticut (my mother's home) then go to Nazareth, PA for the Martin Guitar Factory. We always seek the iconic & historic places. Just go there!

Coming from that direction, I'd sat yes. There are some awesome hikes and a great lookout. However, if you already live in upstate NY, you have some pretty good scenery yourself.
