I’m confused about how to get to the island from Oakland. From what I can tell, you go from Oakland to SF to the island...but what pier in SF? Ferry building or Pier 41? Is it a single ticket from Oakland, or do I need to purchase another ticket in SF?
If you use the Blue and Gold Fleet ferries, those leave from Pier 41. I think that will allow you more time on the island if that's what you're looking for. The ferries leaving from Pier 33 are mostly for Alcatraz, although some are for a combined Angel Island-Alcatraz tour. You can't linger on the island if you're doing the tour, you need to be back promptly when the ferry leaves at it's scheduled time.
Pier 41. I am not sure about Oakland but I think you need to purchase a ticket to Angel island at Pier 41.
Hi, not sure about Oakland but once you get to San Fran it’s easy - the tourist pier is pier 39 and the tickets for angel island are sold in a booth alongside pier 39 - anyone can direct you and it’s well advertised. The ferries run from a terminal behind the booth and, again, anyone will point you there and they’re clearly marked.
You buy a single or return but you can’t stay on the island overnight (unless arranged with rangers) so the single is only relevant as you can get the ferry from angel island to another location, not necessarily back to the pier - although that would be easier hope this helps.
There’s nothing there except a small cafe but it’s beautuful - enjoy
Good question. As a first-time traveler, I was confused also. Angel Island is a California State Park, but the ferry is privately run. It does not take reservations and you must pay cash for your tickets once you arrive. The whole operation sounds a bit shady, but it is actually exceptionally-well run. We traveled to the island from Tiburon on the north side of the bay; however, from Oakland, I presume you will want to ferry from Pier 41 in San Francisco. Parking at Pier 41 is shared with the Pier 39 parking garage. I wanted to include links for you, however, TripAdvisor doesn't allow it.
The tour runs concurrent with Alcatraz, I think it was pier 33 that you purchase tickets. There is a boat that leaves from Around Oakland, best to call the tour company
