I was planning a trip for the week of Thanksgiving - stupid question but we are from the carribbean so will there be snow for tubing that time of year and how far is Hawksnest from Blowing Rock?
I would not expect snow that early, it really depends on the temp if they can make it or not. I would look further north like Snowshoe Mtn or anywhere in the Poconos for snow that early...And I would say about 15 miles and about 30min drive time on curvy road. Hope this helps.
agreed. first responder is who I'd follow. I hope you enjoy your trip!
yea, I'll follow Jacob on this one. typically too hot in NC for snow that time of year. enjoy your adventure wherever you decide to go.
I wouldn't anticipate too much snow at that time. I'm not certain the temps would be low enough to make snow either. We stayed in Blowing Rock and drove over to Hawks Nest to tube. It took us about 30 minutes.
Never a stupid question:) thanksgiving can still be on the warmer side on NC but some years we get natural snow. Most tubing areas have snow machines and of weather is cold enough they will blow snow. Appalachian ski resort doesn't have there own tubing runs but beech and sugar mountain do. You can also go to hawksnest tubing (and there is another new one too not sure of name) that is about30-40 min from Appalachian.
Hope that helps!
I wish I could give you a better answer but it is not likely for there to be snow. It just usually is not cold enough. just check the weather before you arrive. If it going to be below freezing they can make snow, but if it is going to be warm, tubing is very slow.
The distance is not that far but it is the twisty mountain roads that take so long. There is a zip line at hawksnest that looked pretty cool. Also there are so many great places to hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The biggest piece of advice is to watch the weather and pack accordingly.
Doubtful there will be snow on Thanksgiving. Hawksnest is anywhere from a 20-30 Drive. Still a great time of year to visit. Most if not all leaves will be gone and you will have great views while driving, especially on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain.
The Ski season runs - they shoot for Thanksgiving as a start date since its a holiday and people are vacationing. But if its warm then they can't make snow until it gets below 32 degrees. It's a hit miss business. We've only had maybe 10" of natural snow but they can make unlimited amounts with the snow making machines. To drive form App ski to Hawksnest can take average 45 mins depending on traffic and weather conditions. If you ski at Sugar Mt. then you can get a bigger better resort and only be 15-20 mins from Hawksnest. Have Fun!!!
