Just moved to the area. Looked forward to the Riverwalk for getting in some walking for exercise, however I've been told that it's not safe at all. Any insight??
We strolled once during the day & once at dusk, we did not see anyone/anything that made us uncomfortable - we felt perfectly safe. As another reviewer mentioned, perhaps someone who lives there would have a better answer to the question.
My family and I were there on a Sunday afternoon for several hours and walked a great distance up the walk. I noticed scant few individuals that warranted a second look (I am of a suspicious nature). Also, they have police officers that are stationed at intervals as well as mobile cops on 4 wheelers. We never got the sense that we were in an "unsafe" environment...quite the opposite.
I was there only during the day, with lots of foot traffic. At that time, it was quite safe. I've been told that after 9 pm, the drinking and behavior gets a little crazy, especially on the weekends. I do think that a local would be better able to address your question though.
I would walk between the Oglethorpe Bridge and the 14th St Bridge. Stay away from the isolated areas.
I stayed there often at night and while I saw homeless people I did not feel threatened at all - took dog walks at midnight, left my wet clothes hanging off the truck while we were at dinner. I saw kayaks on roofs all over town and bikes on skimpy locks outside the restaurants - how bad can it be?
Certain areas along the river may be obscured by trees and not 100% safe. There are areas, including the 14th Street Bridge area that looks to be safe. It is the same with any riverwalk area, you must be aware of your surroundings.
i have walkes the day and late evening hours and never had a problem.
We were visiting at the time, and many people were out there walking and jogging. And we were watching the river rafting and said how nice it was. We were told it is nice but not safe to walk alone. And that you should walk in a group.
The only time I've been uncomfortable at night is near the walking bridge around about 10-11 pm on a Friday night - however I honestly don't make a habit of late night strolls as I'm a bit of a scaredy cat. I've heard the same, but I've not experienced it. Enjoy the river walk though. It's one of my favorite places!
I was there on a weekday morning and into the afternoon and on both sides of the river. I did not see or recognize and security issues. Maybe you could call the local police departments. They would definitely know how many calls they do or do not get from the river walk.
Never had an issue. We saw several officers on bike patrol.
