Kelso Dunes Questions & Answers

Hi. I am taking my two kids (age 5 and 9) on a road trip from LA to the Grand Canyon. I am planning to do this in one day but would like to stop at the Kelso Dunes on the way. How much time do you think is needed for Kelso Dunes? I'm wondering if it isn't worth our stop if we have only limited time. Do you have any advice?

Thanks!

You need to plan for at LEAST two hours if you're travelling with kids, who may need extra time climbing, especially in the heat. There is only 1 bathroom at the start of the trailhead, so little ones with small bladders may spell trouble. There's just not a great view from the bottom, so stopping in, especially with the dunes being so far out there, just isn't worth it. It's better as a side trip from Joshua Tree and the drive to it from this end is gorgeous.

Not worth it if you're not going to spend the day really. the real 'dunes' part of the dunes is quite a hike and if you can't put in the hours, there's little to see/do at the foot of the dunes.
