I stayed in The Blue City, in Chefchouen. That's the part that you see in postcards, etc. It is really amazing, there is no other place like it. Is there much to do there? Not that much, it is very laid back, but it is unique and if that is what drives you, go there.

Essaouira has more restaurants, caters more to tourists, has places you can go to that serve alcohol. There is at least one club there. So, different scene than Chef.

Want mountains? Chef. Want water? Essaouira.

I visited both cities, and indeed they are very different. But there are similarity. Both cities are laidback, compared to Marrakech and Fez.

But Essaouira is more like a big city. It is a beautiful coastal city with tall walls and forts. Chefchaouen is quieter, more like a big village, and doesn't have fort as I can recall. If you like sea more, go to Essaouira, but if you are more like a mountain kind of person, Chefchaouen is where you should go.

Personally, I would like to spend more day in Chef, while a day trip to Essaouira (while staying in Marrakech) is enough for me.

Definitely Chefchaouen - it's unique - you can go to a beach anywhere!

We visited both places in Sept 2016. Essaouira is a very nice relaxing town but we both agree that Chefchaouen is more unique. Visit in the early morning when the shops are still closed to get more blue doors and less tourists. Our photos came out amazing!!

Essaouria, has a lot to do, it is good in the summer for wind surfing. 1 hour away from Chefchaouen is the Mediterranean and the town of Martil so you really get 2 for one if you go to Chefchaouen.

Essaouria is nice and they sell furniture too, but it was pretty windy when I was there in July. It also depends on what time of the year you go to either. Plus Chefchaouen is near the mountains so you get the beautiful views when driving.

We had to choose between Chef and Essaouira. Those posts did not exist at that time but we got to the same conclusion talking to people who visited Morocco and Moroccans.. Both places are spectacular, Chef has more cachet and is less touristic, this is where we went an we loved it!

Unfortunately I did not make it to Essaouira. I LOVED the Blue City but hear terrific reports about Essaouira. Maybe the choice can be what you prefer, sea or hills/small mountains. Chefchaouen is not on the coast, it is a place where you can hike in beautiful nature, hills and small mountains in addition to the magic old historic city. Hope this helps.
