Hi - We will be at Machupicchu at the end of December. We are taking a train from Cusco to Machupicchu, but are looking for alternative modes of travel for our return trip to Cusco on December 26. We would like to stop in Ollanta that night. How would we purchase train tickets from Machupicchu to Ollanta? After our day (December 27) in Ollanta we would like to take a bus or car/van to Cusco or perhaps other locations. Is this something you could advise us on? Thanks - Joel Heinz
Yes, you can travel form Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes, actually) to Ollantaytambo by train. When you purchase your Cusco > Machu Picchu tix, let the agent know you only want return tix to Ollanta.
You can then catch a collective (shared ride van) from oOlanta plaza to Cusco, or hire a shutttle/taxi to take you there.
Forgot to add that the Kuychi Punku Hostal in Ollantaytambo is a good place to stay - see a review I did earlier this year.
Hi Joel. You may get this answer twice as I had an internet glitch on my first try. I am pretty sure the train does not go from MP to Ollantaytambo. You would have to get off the train at Urubamba and then take a taxi or even better (and cheaper) a combi. Going from Ollantaytambo to Cusco you can take a taxi but it will be expensive. The best bet is to take a combi to the Urubamba bus station and then a bus from there to Cusco. Total travel time will be about 2 hours. There are some great places to stay in Cusco and a few in Ollantaytambo. Let me know if you have more questions about that area.
