Hi, it's best driving, renting a car & from Auckland to rotorua is 2:40 mins by car or close to 8 hrs via a bus which will be a whole day wasted if travel by bus. If your staying one day you not gonna see much, we stayed 3 nights in rotorua & required more & were happy what we did. The same applies when going to Piahia Bay of Islands, from rotorua it's 5 1/2 hr drive, so many windy roads, plenty of things to do, good luck & enjoy ur holiday in April.

You can fly from Auckland to Rotorua. I don't think there are flights from Rotorua to Piahia. There is a bus route, about 8 hrs travel time. We rented a car and drove to Piahia from Auckland to stay a couple of nights there. It's about 3.5 hour drive from Auckland. We had the car for several days and took our time. We then traveled south over a 3 day time frame, ending up in Rotorua.

Enjoy!

Both are about 5 hours but in opposite directions so Rotorua to Pahia would be a 10 hour drive.

You can fly kerikeri is the closest airport to pahia, you really need a couple of nights in each place

In New Zealand, it's not about how far places are apart, because nothing is all that far, it's all about the time it takes to get there.

Rotorua to Paihia is a very long journey and if your time is limited, then flying might be the option. Having said that, both places have so much to see, that is you can afford more time, it's well worth it

Hi!

Correction, bus from Rotorua is more in line with 10-11 hours. Airports closest are Whangarei & Kerikeri. Again we drove & took our time.

On our recent visit to NZ we were on a cruise ship so no relevant suggestion regarding your question. However, on a previous visit we did like others above have suggested, hired and car and drove ourselves at our pace. All the best with your visit.

I would suggest that you hire a car left hand driving in NZ. The roads are easy to drive on and directions easy too follow, however you can get a bus if you prefer. Rotorua is South of Auckland and Paihia is 3 1/2 hrs north so you may want to set your trip carefully. You would not be disappointed in either location.
