The best way to get from Amsterdam to Haarlem is by train. Not to expensive, not to far and a really enjoyable trip if you like public transportation. You could always rent a car but I never do because I don't want to hassle with knowing all the bike, pedestrian and road laws.

We took the bus from outside the airport at Schiphol. Ask for directions and bus number in information. it took around 30 minutes.

We took a river cruise, and walked the pedestrian streets. Haarlem is voted best shopping town for those who like that.

We also took a bus to a coast citu close by and walked the beautiful beach.

Train is best. It is a very short ride and they run frequently. We spent the day there just wandering around. There's tons to see (and great shopping!) Don't miss one of the herring stands.

Hi and I believe it's only a short train ride from Amsterdam to Haarlem. I went straight from Amsterdam Airport on the number 300 bus which takes about 40 minutes and the buses run frequently. Highlights for me while I was there too were the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum. The main cathedral is lovely and I attended a free evening organ recital. Just walking around the city is a delight. It also has very good shopping.

The train is how we went, and it's very simple, and short. We walked to the Museum from there. Yes, there are many things to do in the city apparently but we didn't have much time other than to visit the museum, go to a few shops, and eat lunch in town. We had to be back to Amsterdam to board a river cruise boat, otherwise we would've spent the day.
