Wilts & Berks Canal Questions & Answers

Swindon, United Kingdom

Is there any fish left in this canal? i heard that the canal club have been electrifying the fish, catching them and selling them off to raise funds is this right?... what does that do to the eco-system? the fish aren't property of the canal club are they? fancy netting the sparrows that visit my garden for a quick buck? apparently they "relocated" the water voles and set up Newt walls as well. lets all mess with nature!

There are Fish (Perch..Roach..) , Ducks , Moorhens,Herons etc etc in/ on this strech of Canal.

It's a Canal......boats should be on it & using it, this adds to the attraction & keeps things moving on it so the water dosent become so stagnant.

We heard at Waitrose that fish were removed from the canal and relocated because 'fishermen' had been fishing at night with lights which apparently annoyed residents in the area.

No, Trevor, I live and travel very close up and down the canal. I regularly talk to the residents and dog walkers. I have never heard of any complaint, nor seen fishermen with lights and any that I have seen have been quickly moved on by the police that patrol the area. However I do know that a hell of a lot of fish have been sold off... to be honest there are allot of unhappy people who miss seeing the fish, myself included. I used to enjoy feeding and watching them cruse around with my children, (we miss the ducks too). I have pictures of them easy seen in the clear water before the boats came....
