- Jerry EKansas City, MO123 contributionsWent and experienced this amazing park. Highly recommend a guided tour then do a helicopter ride after. Walking on the lava rock and going in the tubes is such a cool experience. The different weather throughout the park is a cool experience too.Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Esther P2 contributionsReaching the summit of Mauna Kea was a highlight of our time in Hawaii. Being at 13,000+ feet in elevation was an experience. We took the trip up in a 4x4 van and it was definitely something we will remember forever. The views from the summit were amazing.
We totally want to come back and do a sunset and stargazing tour.Written 28 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Beforehand, I wasn’t sure about paying $30 per person but it was well worth it. There was so much to see, we could have spent all day. I was ecstatic to even find pitcher plants, which I was not expecting at all!!Written 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jodi MLethbridge, Canada324 contributionsThe cost is $5 a person and $10 to park. Parking is limited and many parked on the side of the road outside of the parking lot.
Half the pathway was closed so it meant the pathways were a little more crowded.
Walk wasn’t long, but had plenty of stairs.
Falls were neat and there were lots of cool trees and flowers.Written 1 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I highly recommend visiting this beach at least once in your lifetime. I believe it’s listed as one of the best beaches in the United States. Dogs are not allowed unless they are service animals. I had my little dog with me for a bit but felt uncomfortable having her there because they aren’t really allowed.Written 4 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Glw314164 contributionsA hike that shouldn’t be missed. Go early to get a parking space. We went counter clockwise which is the best direction. Don’t miss the Lava Tube at the rim. You can also park at the Visitor Center which adds some flat length.
400 ft vertical elevation change and uneven surfaces makes it a moderate hike. Lots of families so it is not hard if you are in fair shape. Rain forest at the top and desert at the bottom so wear layers. The National Park is chilly most of the time at the rim. Bring water for the hike.Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Come early or later in the day for closer parking. Good sized waves for boogie boarding and surfing.Written 30 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - fluChicago, IL164 contributionsWe stopped by the Vanillerie on our way to the airport on our last day mostly out of curiosity. We talked with Steve, who was very knowledgeable, but missed the the full tour due to our flight time. We tried some of the ice cream made with the farm's vanilla and made a few purchases at the gift shop. The tour looked very interesting and I'll have to get on it the next time we are visiting!Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Philip B3 contributionsWe did the tour here, and it was lovely. Our tour guide, Rick, is a transplant to the island from the midwest but clearly really loves being here and giving the tours. He gave us a lot of good information about how coffee grows on Hawaii, why this particular belt is good for it, and the ways that the climate and geography affect the coffee Kona produces. We got to explore the coffee trees, the production process, and the roasting process, and to try five or six of their coffee blends. I've done three or four tours in the last couple of weeks, and this was definitely the best tour.
The coffee tasting wasn't *quite* as strong as the tour. Four of the blends that were available are just sitting in samovars and were good, but not exceptional. At the end of the tour they offer you a sample of premium coffee, and that day's happened to be a medium roast peaberry (a mutation where only one seed forms inside a coffee cherry), which was really good. Overall, 9/10 for the tour, 9/10 for the roasting conversation, and a solid 12/10 for Charlie, the coffee golden retriever who spent the whole time we were there walking up to groups, flopping on their feet, and requiring belly rubs. [edit: Charlie apparently doesn't work Saturdays, just fyi.]
The coffee bar was also excellent; had a nice conversation with Conner about options, and ended up telling him to surprise me. Got a great and interesting combination of flavors with my cold brew. 10/10.
I went back to do the "brew your best cup" class and it was a really excellent experience. Reinforced a bunch of my existing practices, taught me a couple of new tips, and let me confirm that I prefer pour over to French press. Definitely worth the time! 10/10.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The buildings and statues are neat to look at and you can watch the fish in the lava tide poolsWritten 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Hal72Olympia, WA639 contributionsWe always stop here on trips around the south end. Beautiful beach. We come primarily for the Green Turtles that are sleeping on the beach or feeding on the rocks close to shore. A reliable place to see them. We have never snorkeled here. Does not seem to be a great place for snarling as the bay is open to the ocean and there is quite a bit of surge. Nice picnic tables under the palms for a meal.Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Iliahi CIsland of Hawaii, HI36 contributionsTook the short cut on saddle road and it was a nice scenic drive across to Kona and back to Hilo town. Was able to see Mauna kea Summit too on our way back.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
