Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the Navy airmen who died while training during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in September of 1997. Naval Air station (NAS) Wildwood was commissioned on April 1, 1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers. Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. In June 1997, NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight. The museum also features a library, food vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips and senior tours.

We have a home in Stone Harbor and this was our first visit to see the Alpacas. The 5 adults enjoyed it and the 6 year old Loved it! Tish was a lovely guide and her school teacher roots showed in her kind directions to our 6-year old granddaughter. Book in advance and do try to include this in your shore adventures. We love the Cape May Zoo but this was an extra-special small
    Group opportunity! Thanks!

This is a wonderful, small museum of Naval aviation from WWII area. The hangar is the last standing wooden hangar of its kind. It houses various planes similar to those used to teach divebombing which helped win the battle of Midway and the war in the Pacific and end the war. 42 Naval aviators were killed in training. It is a gem. Thankful for the folks who have preserved this history and sacrifice of our military.

Cape May Lighthouse is a gem! The views from the top are like something out of a postcard – you can see the ocean and the bay in all their glory. The climb is a bit of a workout, but totally worth it. The whole place is well-kept, and the museum is interesting too. If you're in the area, it's a great spot to soak in some coastal beauty.

Cape May Beach is like a coastal dream come true. The sandy shores are perfect for a lazy day, and the old-school Victorian vibe adds a charming touch. It's got that classic beach feel with friendly waves and a laid-back atmosphere. Ideal for anyone craving a chill day by the sea.

My family stopped by here during our visit to Cape May and I immediately fell in love with the little shop right when I saw the little vintage shoes outside as we walked up. The shop had everything from cute tickets to old clothes, to doll sets, to old cigarette ads, to old buttons and tools.

The shop also had many historical items that would be sure to satisfy anyone with even a slight interest in history, such as myself! The store owner, Jeanne, was a joy to talk to. When she learned I liked history she immediately pulled out an old book (Godey's Fashion and Life) for me to look through, which happened to be the one I had cited in a history paper I wrote! Which just goes to show how many objects of historical important are in this store. Jeanne also showed me an old bodice and let me touch it to see how it was made. I loved being able to see, hold, and learn about history through the objects in front of me!

Jeanne was also a history major and librarian so she could talk at length about the objects in the store. She was very sweet and open, answering my many questions about what she’s collected with passion. She cared about us having a valuable and enjoyable time at her store as we explored her collection.

I left with pictures to hang on my walls, all reasonably priced, and a free postcard she gave me. I am so glad I decided to go to Out of the Past Antiques and it was wonderful to be able to support this business.

This place is a true gem. We will return again with our grandchildren. They will love it. It is so neat taken a step back in time. You can sit and listen to monolog's -- we listen to George Washington Carver. The presenter was excellent!! Went to all these wonderful building that all had there own stories with interpreters so knowledgeable about everything. They love answering questions!!

Ben Franklin was there and showed us all kinds of invention.

From the general store, to the school, to the tin shop - every place was enlightening and interesting.

Always enjoy walking around here when visiting Cape May. This is a great example of urban renewal project that dates back to the 1960s. There is a good variety of shops to stop at. A good selection of eateries. There is a set of clean public rest rooms Great for creative photography. Looking forward to a return on my next trip to Cape May.
