History Museums
The Danbury Museum & Historical Society Authority acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets Danbury's past. Situated in downtown Danbury, the museum preserves the John and Mary rider House 9c.1785), the Dodd Hat Shop (c. 1790), the Marian Anderson Studio, the old King Street Schoolhouse, the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Charles Ives Birthplace. Huntington Hall, a modern exhibit building contains the museum offices and a research library. The Danbury Museum and Historical Society has evolved out of efforts to preserve endangered historic properties. One of the City's oldest structures, the Rider House on Main Street, would have been demolished in 1941 to make way for a gas station had it not been for the intervention of concerned citizens (including the Mary Wooster DAR Chapter). After raising money to purchase this property, these citizens found the Danbury Historical and Arts Center. A merger, in 1947, between the Scott-Fanton Museum and the Danbury Historical and Arts Center, saw the creation of the Danbury Scott Fanton Museum & Historical Society Inc. During the 1950's and 60's, the museum acquired the John Dodd Shop, the Ward House, the Charles Ives birthplace, two one room schoolhouses and erected Huntington Hall, where many of its exhibits have been displayed. In 2004, theMuseum was thrilled to add the Marian Anderson Studio to its collection. Famed opera singer Marian Anderson lived in danbury for over 50 years. It was moved to the Main Street campus of the museum in 1999. Restoration of the studio was completed in early 2004. 2006 saw the merger of the Danbury Scott Fanton Museum with the City of Danbury and a new entity was born on July 1, 2008 . . . the Danbury Museum and Historical Society Authority. Tours of the historic buildings on our Main Street campus are available on Saturdays only from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the winter season. Just went for a quick afternoon walk on a sunny October afternoon. Easy to find, good parking, several map boards. We did a circuit of a small lake/ large pond and came across a few chipmunks, which always make us smile

January is a great month to visit here. It's "Absolute Baloney " month. We read in advance about free admission. Sure enough, and it was a great museum for railroad buffs and model train fans. Outdoor tour was a little on the chilly side after a cold front came through. Dress accordingly. Arrive early. Lots to see. Early closing.

Very nice place to research local history. They have done an excellent job to make the museum attractive and informative.

The mall is well kept and has plenty of options to shop. Some of the stores are more upscale so make sure to bring some money!

I retired last year and this is my 77th hike. I have traveled quite a bit and I have hiked A LOT. Today at Bear Mountain Reservation I saw the lake often. I saw a deer, a coyote, and some hikers told me of a momma bear and cub that was reported. AND - we got a photo of a bald eagle. So those who report nothing to see are not looking. Also, this is not something I am not able to say often, the hikers that I spoke to on the trails were AMAZING!!!! I cannot wait to return here. SERIOUSLY - a bald eagle.

event was nice, not too big, not too small. You can see no matter where you were seated. I'd recommend it

Excellent beer and friendly staff. We sat outside. Inside taproom seemed pretty nice too. No food, just food trucks. Pretty isolated location which was part of the charm.

Love the staff at The Dome. My children attended summer camp there and it was safe, fun and they got plenty of exercise. We've also had birthday parties there and my son has played soccer there. The staff is all polite, friendly and helpful. The place is very clean and well kept. Great place for kids and athletes to train.

Richter is one of the nicest public courses around, and in general the folks are polite, too. Not an easy course, short, flat, or beginner course; best enjoyed if you already know how to play and can appreciate a nicer course. Some holes penalize even a small mistake; if you're having a bad day Richter could make it a very bad day; but neither is it insanely difficult. It is also a pretty course. However, there can be "other" issues, for example, if you mistakenly golf when there is a tournament going on, play can be very slow. (Tho, I suppose this is true of many courses; I'm not sure how many rangers Richter has to keep folks moving along, but they could use more. One kind of "expects" players to know the etiquette on a nicer course (???)

If you already know how to play the game and can be patient when (sometimes) play is slow or there are other annoying issues; highly recommended.

This is not like many state Welcome Centers that offer a great amount of information, large facilities and an impressive facility. More like a run of the mill rest area. Ok to stop for a bio break or rest, but does not provide the character of the state (at least I hope it doesn't).

Good trail for a short flat hike. Problem is, lots of road noise due to proximity to Route 7. Also, the Gun Range is across the road ... lots of noise (gunshots) in the warmer weather.
