What travellers are saying
- Liege-Bastogne-LiegeZurich, Switzerland378 contributionsYou could miss this wonderful church, and that would be a pity.
Unlike so many churches and cathedrals, this lovely church doesn't announce itself so much. In its immediate vicinity, you almost don't notice it, you could almost walk right by it, it's that plain from the outside.
it is of historic importance too, i won't relate it here due to lack of talent and the ease of finding it elsewhere.
What struck me though is the beautifully ornate altar and the very unusual three-tiered gallery on both sides of the main aisle. I'd not seen something like that before.
St. Jean de Luz is a lovely, elegant seaside town in the Pays Basque. In late September 2022 - not April 2023 as indicated - the town had had its summer visitors, they had gone home, it was left to the locals and a few visitors. And it is lovely - the beach is a large cove, the walkway is beautiful, the restaurants willing to do welcome those who are left.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. First it's old and strategic to France.... Second it is a superlatively lovely placeWritten 7 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - saronicZurich, Switzerland26,274 contributionsAn experience not to miss, when in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, is a visit to Les Halles to see what fishes are caught in the seas here and to check the 'produits du terroir', like cheeses, Bayonne ham, fruit, vegetables, 'gâteau Basque' or 'piment d'Espelette'. Maybe there is something to take home. The market hall is open daily (also Sundays) from 7am till 1pm. On Tuesday and Friday mornings, as well on Saturday in July-August, there can be found stalls outside as well. As usual in markets there is quite an activity going on, thus ideal for diving into the atmosphere of a region.
'Les Halles' though are also worth visiting for the architecture, influenced by the style of Victor Baluard, who designed the famous 'Les Halles' of Paris (dismantled and replaced in the 1970's). Special is the use of cast iron and of glass, which can be see here as well. At the short sides of the gabled building are big arched windows and everything is held by cast-iron, inside by pillars painted turquoise. The walls again are done with pink and white bricks, arranged in a decorative pattern. The ceiling inside looks like an upturned boat.
For a coffee break, a drink or a snack there is inside the bar 'La Buvette des Halles', while outside the market building are to be found several cafés, that also have outdoor seating.Written 26 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paul VSun City West, AZ226 contributionsFun place to visit... very picturesque, but parking was almost impossible. - TicoloverKlamath Falls, OR485 contributionsHad the weather been better, we'd planned on an excursion to the mountains; but since it was cloudy & drizzly, we opted instead to visit St. Jean de Luz. This was one of places we toured - a very interesting experience with a local guide who explained so much about the history and provided glimpses of what life may have been like in the location back in that time when Louis XIV visited the area to claim his young bride.Written 6 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - saronicZurich, Switzerland26,274 contributionsOnce mainly known as a fishing port, Saint-Jean-de-Luz became an important 'station balnéaire' as of the second half of the 19th century, especially after the three sea walls (Digue de Socoa, Digue de l'Artha, Digue de Sainte Barbe) had been built, protecting the beaches in the bay, and also with the arrival of the railway in 1864.
The beautiful main beach with fine sand is the about 1km long Grande Plage, just by the town. At its back is the pedestrian only Promenade Jacques Thibaud. At both ends are piers, one just by the narrow harbour entrance with the Art Deco lighthouse, the other, called 'Digue aux Chevaux' in the north, separating the Grande Plage from the 'Plage Nord Digue Chevaux' and the 'Plage Aux Bleus' below the Sainte Barbe hill. These last two beaches have partly rocks in the water, well visible at low tide.
Across the bay, on the Ciboure side, is the smaller, but also attractive Socoa beach. In the summer season here and at the Grande Plage there is a 'surveillance', while at the two beaches to the north of the horses pier there is none. Kite-surfing is allowed just south of this pier, but only off season.
Behind the Grande Plage and the Promenade Jacques Thiers are the Casino La Pergola with a passageway protruding onto the beach, a building from 1928 by renowned French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, but with several changes from the 1950's. Here are also the 'Grand Hotel', so-called since 1982, previously having been the Hotel Terminus (1904), then the 'Modern Hotel'. The 'Hotel de l'Angleterre' from 1881 is now called the 'Hotel de la Plage'.Written 30 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Daydreamer58Southern Germany239 contributionsThe Casino consists predominantly of slot machines even for Roulette. Therefore you are playing on your own; in the later evening they are opening staffed Black Jack tables. The adjacent restaurant is worth a try.Written 23 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
