We’ll known for its signature architecture designs, such as the carved and painted eaves, bay windows, and more.

This town is enjoyable to stroll through. Quiet most of the year, except during the town’s major festivals in January and April.

Fantastic visit with Toshiko and her friends (with a little help from Google translate. Wonderful pastries, cheesecakes and coffee served on antique bone china in an authentic historic Hida home. Just lovely!

A gentle walk by the canals, gazing at the carp and the historic buildings is a great way to relax and enjoy the beauty that traditional Japanese villages represent.

We were having dinner in Hida Furukawa, and were served sake. I liked the taste, and asked how I could order some to take home. Before I knew it, two bottles were delivered by the brewery even though it was past opening time. It wasn't expensive too.
Now, two months later, I'm enjoying the sake. The taste is just exquisite.

On my trip to Hida in September 2023, one of my key interests in Hida Furukawa was to see the Setogawa River and White-walled Storehouse Street. Hida Furukawa is a former castle town and the river was built to segregate the samurai residence area to the east and the merchant district on the west in the late 16th century. The area has been beautifully preserved to this day, with many carp swimming in the canal. the white walls are the rear side of the merchant shops.

Furukawa is unique in that it holds three festivals every year, the Sandera-mairi on January 15th, the Furukawa Festival on April 19th to 20th, and the Kitsunebi (a ghost light phenomenon where light is observed in the dark; most likely so called because foxes (kitsune) were thought to trick people) Festival on the fourth Saturday in September. Of the three festivals, the Kitsunebi Festival based on a folk lore called Fox bride’s Wedding Procession (Kitsune-no-yomeiri) started most recently from 1990, obviously as a Machi-okoshi (town revitalization) measure to support the local economy. The Sandera-mairi, which is to visit the three Buddhist temples of the Jodo-shinshuu sect on January 15th (believed to be the day on which the founder of the sect Shinran died) in remembrance of his virtuous deeds, is thought to have started over 200 (some say 300) years ago in the Edo era. Furukawa Festival is the annual festival of Keta Wakamiya Shinto Shrine. I first paid a visit to the Hida Furukawa Festival Exhibition Hall to obtain a better understanding of the Furukawa Festival. The museum displays three out of the ten festival floats (the Kaguradai float to carry the Deity leading the procession and the nine festival floats that follow) on a rotating basis. In addition to the opportunity to view the actual size and beauty of the floats, you can learn a lot from the highlights of the festival movie they run every 20 minutes. This was well worth the 700 yen admission fee.

Furukawa is known for its Furukawa Festival, and most festivals in Japan are redicated to a Shinto Shrine. Keta Wakamiya Shinto Shrine is located about 1 kilometer east of the Furukawa town district, closer to the mountains, a typical setting for a Shinto shrine. I parked at the free car park by the grand entrance torii gate and went up the steps leading to the main shrine area. I understand the steps are briefly featured in the anime movie “Your Name”. The main shrine building and the area in front is of a typical style seen in many shrines in the mountain areas, and is where the Furukawa Festival starts and ends on the second day.

I used to live 3 years in Takayama. Nagareha was one of the many options around, however my favourite one.
35 minutes by car from Takayama, beautiful slopes, great food on the slopes, amazing hot springs in the resort. Awesome slopes. I really love slopes without artificial surface preparation. You really enjoy the real snow. One of the best skiing ever.

I found the Takumikan Craft Museum to be a very informative guide to wood craft. The English language audio guide provided plenty of information about the skills of Japanese carpenters.
The traditional carpentry techniques don't use any nails and there are example joints which you can play with to see how they fit together - some surprisingly complex - and some wooden puzzles which provide amusement and frustration in equal measure.
I spent an afternoon in Hida, having caught the train from Takayama. English maps were available at Hida station and it was an easy walk from the train station to the beautiful old town where the museum is located.
