What travellers are saying
- Tommy599Two Rivers, WI874 contributionsEpidaurus is recognized as the birthplace of Asklepios, the god of healing. They tell us the entire site was renowned for its extensive medical facilities and healing treatments from the sixth century BC until about AD 200.
Today Epidaurus is perhaps more famous for its well preserved fourth-century theater. The upper row of stone seats was installed by the Romans.
The theater has near perfect acoustics (as Tom gave out with another speech to anyone that would listen HA HA). They say a coin dropped at the center of this 14,000-seat structure can easily be heard from its farthest reaches. Tourists are not allowed to sing, but offering a statement is allowed. Needless to say, Tom had to voice a loud comment (Quid-Est-in-Nomani = High school Latin for = What is in a Name)!
Some interesting perspective is that in ancient time; if you had some form of illness or deformity, it was because the gods had inflicted it upon you, --- So you would purchase a stone model representation of where or what your problem was and you would offer “IT” up at the temple to get the aliment to go away / be healed!!!! – example if you lost your hearing, you would bring a stone model of an ear.
The theater was an important part of the healing process, and years later Hypothesis would teach the people that your aliments were usually caused by natural environments you encountered every day, and NOT that the god’s were punishing you.
When it comes to the theater, it was felt that entertainment would make you feel better, and you would heal faster.Written 28 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Very fascinating ancient healing complex. The cost is 12 € per person, but there is a discount for children and retirees.
The large area includes the archeological sites with many structures, a small but well appointed museum and the nearby amphitheater.
It is important to take the time to read the explanations. It was quite a healing complex! We did not have a guide; if there is such an option visit with a guide which can be a major enhancement of the experience.Written 12 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can enter from the beach or from water, parking your boat 50-100 m from the shore. You can see beautiful fish if you snorkel and the ruins of old houses. The ruins are not spectacular but it is still fun.Written 13 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - podrozniczka60New Jersey14,840 contributionsEasy to follow displays and just enough information to follow and get oriented. Essential part of the visit to the area.Written 12 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jordan WMelfort, Canada246 contributionsThe good - it’s an interesting place as it was the first medical center ever! The amphitheatre is intact and still in use. I don’t know if I would come out from Athens just for this but I would definitely recommend if you are doing a multi site itinerary.
The bad - none
The ugly - none

It is a nice place for morning and evening swim. The bottom is stony and one has to pay attention due to concrete structures under water. Early and mid-October this is not a crowded place.Written 12 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - davidpost1970Nafplio, Greece35 contributionsExcellent museum for people like me, with a scientific interest for stones, minerals and fossils of Greece and the world. All the specimens are displayed nicely and with good light. The shop provides a nice and payable collection of minerals and fossils and beautifully by the collectioner’s wife handcrafted jewellery. The collection of bugs, insects and butterflies is not big. It is not my field of knowledge, so I cannot judge the quality of it. But nicely displayedWritten 26 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- tedactSt. Johns, FL2,881 contributionsThis location was one of most favorite, peaceful stops. Please know that it is a working monastery. You will be asked to cover appropriately. They will provide the cover. Please be respectful of this very prayerful, holy place. They also have some handmade items that they sell. It was incredible.Written 1 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
