My family and I arrived in Vinales to find Humberto waiting for us (right as we exited the car!) to take us on a tour of the valley. We had no idea what to expect, and this tour ended up being unanimously our favorite experience in Cuba! We took a quick look at the beautiful view from the top of the hill by Hotel Los Jazmines, then headed to a restaurant right down the hill with Humberto for a very yummy lunch! We were chatting immediately, and quickly became comfortable with our guide, as he was very friendly, funny, and knowledgable about the area and about Cuba in general. My parents speak Spanish, so were able to practice some with him, but he was also really easy to communicate with in English, which was great for my sister and I (non-Spanish speakers).
After this, we walked down into the valley, while Humberto told us a bit about the area and pointed out different plants, telling us about their uses in local herbalism/medicine, which I found super fascinating! We visited a Tobacco farm, and got to visit with the family who lives there-- two little girls let us hold their new born puppies while their mother made us fresh coffee... so fun and special! It was so beautiful, even though we were there on a rainy and cloudy day-- Humberto made sure to be checking the weather so that we were under cover (watching the farmer roll us cigars, or sitting down to drink fresh sugarcane juice!) for the rain, and were never caught in a downpour!
Then came the horseback riding, which was SO FUN and Humberto made sure we all felt comfortable, even though we are not regular horse riders at all... it was just so magical to be riding horses through the lush green valley, listening to the birds and seeing only animals, not another person in sight except for the farmers we visited!
After visiting with another really wonderful farmer, who we bought some delicious mango-flower honey from, we made our way to a viewpoint to look over the whole valley. Honestly, one of my favorite parts of the day was riding the horses back to Humbertos house as the sun slowly set over the valley, just feeling so lucky to be in such a beautiful place!
Thank you to Humberto and all of the lovely people we visited with for making our time in Vinales so memorable.
