Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been doing this walk for many, many years as tourists. We've mainly come in spring and early summer, and you can either get a perfectly calm mirror lake (and then the light might be all wrong), or a breezy day, or an absolutely wet, miserable day. Whether it's dawn or dusk or during the day, we've enjoyed the view from Reflection Island or the extended loop walk.

On this occasion, we did both a dusk and a dawn walk to Reflection Island over two days. Unfortunately, on our dusk walk which was on a lovely fine evening in May, we find the lake was full of honking geese rippling the water as they swam, together with a slight breeze also ruffling the surface of the lake. So, no quiet contemplation while awaiting the setting sun (which was difficult this occasion as well because of chatting tourists). You can never tell. But we got a lovely view of the rays of the setting sun glistening off the Alps - better I feel in the Spring and Summer months as the sun rises and sets at a more southerly angle. Our preference has always been the months of late August. But even seasoned professionals may never get the perfect reflection - we just enjoy the walk and the quiet contemplation during the early hours of a cold misty morning (maybe listen to birdsong if you can avoid honking geese and tourists on cell phones). It's a decent walk even the shorter way to just Reflection Island - not a purely level track, but doable for most with reasonable fitness. Will we do it again when we're next in Fox - yes.

Fox glacier trail an easy 45 min 1 hour walk
Beautiful large trail in a scenic tropical forest.
Must say the glacier is quite far away to get a good look
Nevertheless, everything around it is breathtaking

Walk along the lovely coastal scenery or explore the miners cemetery or the old mining relics of the failed attempts with bucket dredging to secure the gold. It's a 12km of a good gravel road on our visit

Like its neighbour Franz Josef, Fox Glacier has retreated so far in recent years it can now only be seen from a distance, after a walk to a lookout.
The Franz Josef walk is much shorter, but the Fox Glacier walk is a lovely 1-2 hour return, which can also be done by bike.
After parking just beyond the bridge you follow a 4 wheel drive track along the river and then up the hill. It soon gets into the rainforest, with frequent views of the river alongside.
The lookout is a hole cut through the forest, 2-3 klms away, which gives you a nice, if distant look at the glacier.
On the walk back make sure you take the short diversion into the Moraine walk, which loops back on to the main track. The rainforest in here is dense, and stunning. Ferns, moss, trees, it’s a wonderful little walk.
However this is not open to bikes, and not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as it’s quite rough.
And ignore Google maps – there is no longer any access from the northside and no other bridge across the river - it’s all been washed away in the massive flood of a few years back.

Lovely walk and especially good if you go after dark as there are loads of glow worms that you can see. The path is nice and even and level so it’s easy to walk along, even in the dark. We walked her in the daytime as well and the walk is lovely with some great forest to see along the way.

This is the absolute highlight of the walk to, or from, the Fox Glacier view point.
As it’s rough, and a bit steep in parts. Take this on the way back down the hill.
You won’t be disappointed, it’s thick forest of ferns, fallen trees and most, absolutely lovely.
But no access for bikes, or people with mobility issues.
    Kids would be fine though.
