Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- SdsWaitakere City, New Zealand9 contributionsWe started this in the morning before 9 to get best out of the reflections before the breeze picked up. Kids aged 6 to 12 did this easy enough. There's a steep set of stairs at one point to get to the view of views but we thought it was worth it.Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jaroslav NečasBrno, Czech Republic1,624 contributionsOur group only made it halw-way as the heavy rain ended our try to finish the hike. Surrounding nature and hills are really beautifull.Written 24 November 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stephen & SueCanberra, Australia2,753 contributionsLike its neighbour Franz Josef, Fox Glacier has retreated so far in recent years it can now only be seen from a distance, after a walk to a lookout.
The Franz Josef walk is much shorter, but the Fox Glacier walk is a lovely 1-2 hour return, which can also be done by bike.
After parking just beyond the bridge you follow a 4 wheel drive track along the river and then up the hill. It soon gets into the rainforest, with frequent views of the river alongside.
The lookout is a hole cut through the forest, 2-3 klms away, which gives you a nice, if distant look at the glacier.
On the walk back make sure you take the short diversion into the Moraine walk, which loops back on to the main track. The rainforest in here is dense, and stunning. Ferns, moss, trees, it’s a wonderful little walk.
However this is not open to bikes, and not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as it’s quite rough.
And ignore Google maps – there is no longer any access from the northside and no other bridge across the river - it’s all been washed away in the massive flood of a few years back.Written 12 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Well neither happened. The beach itself is nice and a person could spend a nice afternoon here. You decide if it is worth the gravel run.Written 14 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- SdsWaitakere City, New Zealand9 contributionsWe did this at night with our 4 children aged 6 to 12 and they loved it. Lots of glow worms to see. We were hoping to see kiwi even though it's very rare, however came across 4 very well fed possoms running on the track and up trees so we were all very disappointed. Doc need some more traps asap if they're taking wildlife seriously. Definitely recommend the walk though!Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- tenthlistenSan Francisco, CA336 contributionsWe took this path on the way back to the car after starting on the South Side Walk. It was a great detour. It's definitely more raw (i.e., less maintained) than the South Side Walk and we really enjoyed it. There are markers to show where the glacier ended in the past, which was fascinating to understand how far it really extended. The nature is spectacular and it was a great example of how the environment shifts once a glacier retreats. I definitely recommend this walk, especially as a detour on the South Side Walk.Written 7 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Talאילת5 contributionsOne of the best hikes I've been doing and Highly recommended. The track can be challenging for those who aren't really fit, its worth it absolutely and the pools at the end are amazing! I highly recommend visit the pools early in the morning as well.
We've been welcomed so nicely by Peter Davis and he gave a 'hut talk' and shared the history of the place which added a lot to the general experience for us and we've loved it! the hut has a very nice view from the dorms and there are heaps of sand-flies so I would recommend stay in the hut which will minimise that.
If you can, its worth staying 2 nights and going to Dougles hut (3h hike - a bit more advanced than Copland track).Written 14 February 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So, based on the reviews for the Mt. Fox route, I decided to try it. I was an all-day trek, but worth it for the view and the bracing climb. I'm not in great shape, but made the ascent in about 3.25 hours (with a bit of mud on my pants from slipping), but going down, though challenging was slightly quicker. Though the day was short (it was the day after the winter solstice), there was still enough time to climb and enjoy the scenery...though I forgot my camera and didn't realize it until I was an hour up the trail.Written 2 July 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jeff KBalmain, Australia13 contributionsA nice enough souvenir shop, a modern building with lots of stuff in it. It does sell a number of local arts and crafts items that are different to other places. Prices are on par with other stores. I liked it. I even made a purchase so that's saying something!Written 30 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The helicopter ride was smooth and the views of the glacier were amazing from above. And then we landed on it, for exploring the glacier surface. The guides gave us all necessary equipments and instructions for the adventure. Then we walked along the uneven glacial surface and explored different ice structures and arches. We got ample photo opportunities, tasted the glacial water(take a bottle to fill up if possible, it tastes heavenly) directly from the little streams and also went inside a narrow arch made of ice. The activity is an absolute must do when in the glacier country in New Zealand South Island.Written 1 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
