The boardwalk is clean and well maintained. It’s busy but not crowded. That’s partially because unlike an Ocean City there isn’t a ton of shops/restaurants right on the boardwalk. There are a handful though and the views are excellent.

Beautiful, calming, and clean. I would highly recommend visiting this beach when you have some down time.

The beach is clean and well maintained with a very nice boardwalk along it. It’s a little crowded but not to the point it’s an issue. While it’s a nice beach, there isn’t anything special about it.

Great museum/venue. Make sure you see inside the two parts of the main hanger that house WW 2 aircraft then drive/walk to the WW-1 hanger to see the mostly replica's in there, the nearby German hanger and if they let you go inside the middle hanger which is their workshop.

It was raining out our normal time at the ocean, so we decided to head to the Aquarium. You will find plenty of fish that are native to VA. You can also learn about the historical events that have carved out the VA landscape. Educational .

Our wildlife viewing began as soon as we entered the refuge with a box turtle crossing the road and crabs darting in and out of their burrows and running across the road. Due to high winds we didn't see much bird life but did photograph some interesting spiders and insects.

This is a nice clean park next to the ocean. You can hear live music during the summer. Enjoyed the relaxation the is abundant in the park.

I was skeptical at first after reading all the reviews about the hassle/effort it takes to actually make it there…but glad I went…though there is some truth to those reviews.

They open at 10 sharp…so make sure you get to the gates at or after that. If you get there earlier…9:55..you will be kindly asked to return at 10. At this time masks are required for the bus ride, so they will confirm that you have one at the gate. Also, they will confirm you do not have any firearms in your vehicle. After a brief convo, you will be instructed to park in a designated area. You then go though a metal (wand) detector before submitting your ID (government issued) to them in exchange for a plastic coated numbered map. (You will need to return this after returning to this area before you leave in order to get your ID back) No backpacks, except baby bags are allowed. They had no issue with my professional-grade camera.

You then listen to a 5 minute briefing advising you to stay within the blue line outlined on the map. You then board the bus for a few minute ride to the lighthouse. There is the old lighthouse, which you can enter and climb. There is also a new lighthouse (black/white) which is still functional and you CANNOT enter that one. At the bottom of the old lighthouse, there is a port a potty. There is a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and purchase your pass to go up to the top of the old lighthouse ($10). There is a straight set of outdoor stairs which takes you to the base of the lighthouse. From there, you can enter the lighthouse and proceed up the spiral stairs until you reach a small ladder (5-6 step) to go up into the very top of the lighthouse. If you’ve ever been to other lighthouses before…this is no different…it’s narrow and hot in there, so be mindful.

You can walk around the area a bit (as long as you stay within the blue line). There is a gas station there with a few snacks and drinks. After you are done exploring, you can catch the bus going back at the bottom of the old lighthouse, where you originally dropped off. They have two buses running on rotation I believe, so the wait isn’t long. Upon your return, you give them your numbered map in exchange for your ID.

I believe if you are military, you do not need to go through the screening process and can drive over directly to the lighthouse. Not 100% sure on this though.

Overall I had a good time there. I didn’t have an issue with the restrictions, but I can see how a family with a lot of children, or those with mobility issues would. The lighthouses and grounds are nice to see and take photos of…but there really isn’t much there, so some may lose interest pretty quickly.

Lovely park. No admission or parking fees. Lots of parking spaces in multiple lots.

Lots of paths, steps and hills to get a nice workout in…or a stroll.

Nice play area for the kids. Bathrooms and vending machines available in main parking area.

This is a great beach that locals frequent! Faces the Chesapeake Bay and Bay Bridge Tunnel. It is a great beach to hang out on!

I just went with 3 friends for a night in Mid-May. I was worried about the flies after reading the reviews, but did not encounter any. The weather had been cool leading up to it, and I'm thinking that when the heat gets here late May they start ramping up. We biked in- HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Unless you are going in cooler months, hiking in with no cover will be fairly miserable. We used a bike trailer to stash a lot of our gear and it worked well.
It's a wonderfully remote experience with practically no one on the beach, which you can camp on if you wish.
We did see one cottonmouth on the road but that was it, which was surprising. Watch your step and use your headlamp at night and you should be fine. Turtles, birds and other wildlife abound. Lots more to see than we had time for and I will be back!

What a cool place to visit on a Monday morning. Watching my kids feed the animals while we were walking around drinking hot cider. The treewalk was super awesome. Have not seen anything like it before. My toddler had a really cool time.
