On our trip this was our favourite destination. The village is pretty with colorful and nicely decorated houses, small shops and restaurants. We arrived at lunch time and it felt like a sleepy village, no large groups of tourists, the restaurants seemed closed and a lot of locals were around. It was an enjoyable walk through the town.

You can walk here from the village of Berghiem, the walk is uphill and takes about 20 minutes or so. There was nobody else around when we visited and the area is very peaceful but it is awful to see so many graves, each one has three names on it and most of the soldiers died in 1944. There was a small building that looked like a museum or info centre but it wasn't open when we visited.

I have visited Alsace for a number of years now and always heard great things about this producer. So this year I decided to book an appointment to sample their wines.

Quite simply this was the best wine tasting I have ever had and I learnt so much at the same time.

The wines themselves are quite exceptional and reflect the local terroir. It is quite amazing how diverse the terroir is around Bergheim and this is captured in the wines.

I have been to a number of the top producers in the region and this one definitely sits at the very top.

A must visit for anyone with a serious interest in wine.

Enjoy the views of the wine hills and the quaint village. You can't help but relax and feel at ease. Some parts of the walls and towers are still preserved and you can read facts about them ( french and german). The path goes around the whole village.

    Take a trip to Bergheim.

It isn't as touristy as Riquewihr or Kayserberg, but it's a pleasant and quiet walled village.

If you go, take the time to visit the winery, good wines especially the grand cru.

Wine place to have a degustation of the local wines. And they are very good. Handy for the hotel that we used.

While strolling through this picturesque old walled medieval town, we noticed the name of a street on a building: rue de Juifs. Totally unexpected to find such a street sign, we began to walk along this narrow old way.
Suddenly ahead on my left, I noticed some interesting windows in an obviously public structure. As we approached I became more convinced that this must have been a synagogue. (If I had looked at the map at the main gate of the town, I would have known there was a synagogue to be seen...)
When we got to the corner of the street we found a fine old synagogue with some clear architectural signs of its former function complete with a plaque. We stopped an elderly woman passing by and she confirmed that there were no longer any Jews in town but she remembered as a child the festivals which this community had and invited neighbors to.
The building today is used as an art gallery which was closed for the day when we came by. The passer-by told us only a few pews remained.

This little town in the Elzas, Haut-Rhin has a nearly comlete ring around the old city centre you can walk in half an hour. The city entrance gate is like other towers centuries old and dominates the main street. The little city has a few hotels and restaurants and many characteristic wood frame houses of the region. As a whole it is a rather quiet place.
