Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Marty ..Cebu City, Philippines3,701 contributionsTotally overall , there are plenty of other NSW coastal touristy towns , with better value for money .. as Byron Bay is overpriced .. specifically with accommodation & it’s high street parking fees everywhere over Byron Bay CBDWritten 2 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom12,410 contributionsWategos may not be the main beach in Byron Bay but it is very lovely. It’s a classic Australian surf beach with rolling waves and a long crescent-shaped stretch of almost white sand.
It is a relatively sheltered beach, making it a good choice for swimming. There is some shade on the beach
There are basic facilities including changing rooms, showers and toilets. However there are no lifeguards and street parking is metered and in any case, is extremely limited.
Instead, we walked in from The Pass Beach. It’s paid parking here too but at least there’s a large carpark and lots of space. The walk up and over the headland starts from Palm Valley (alongside the carpark) and is definitely a challenging and steep path in the summer. However its a good way to work up a sweat before you dive into the waves at the other end and on the plus side, you get some absolutely lovely views along the way.Written 12 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Pet friendly beach.Written 13 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It quickly became our favourite beach in Byron.
This is a classic Australian surf beach with rolling waves and a stretch of almost white sand.
At the furthest end is Fisherman’s Lookout, a steep set of wooden stairs leading up the side of a rocky outcrop, with a crows-nest like lookout at the top and an incredible panoramic view.
Just below is a set of large rock pools that are large enough for small children to paddle and swim in. Even toddlers can lie in these warm waters and kick their legs as if they are swimming. This is a very sheltered, safe area.
There are all the facilities you need for a day at the beach, including outdoor showers, toilets, The Pass Cafe, and a large carpark. Like most beachside parking in Byron, it is paid parking.
The easiest parking is down by the boat ramp where you have an almost level walk onto the beach. Otherwise, you can park up at the Captain Cook Lookout but this is nowhere near as convenient. There are a lot of steps to get to the sand and it’s a trek if you have small children and a lot of beach paraphernalia.
If you need to get off the beach and out of the sun for a while, there is a shady paved area with picnic tables back up near The Pass Cafe. There is also a nice, shady little looped walking path through Palm Valley.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We visited Byron Bay during ANZAC weekend.
The beach is adjacent to the town centre, very nice and extremely popular. Even at 10.30 am, it was extremely difficult to find a place to park the car. But once this was done, the beach itself is superb.
There is something for everyone- surfers, swimmers, walkers or those who were there to simply relax.
The water was still quite warm and the sweeping views delightful.Written 16 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lots of rocks to walk on, water shoes not essential but would make your swim more comfortable. Half our group wore crocs, some wore joggers for the walk. Personal preference really.
Water was ice cold but refreshing, really glad we did Killen FallsWritten 23 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Parking nearby but limited like all of Byron Bay.Written 5 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mairwen1United Kingdom12,410 contributionsThis is the most popular beach in Byron Bay. It’s a classic Australian surf beach with a long, long stretch of sand and rolling waves.
It extends all the way east around to the far headland but at some point, it becomes Clarkes Beach, and then area known as The Pass.
It’s centrally located and is just a few minutes walk from the town and all the fashionable shops and cafes of Byron.
The beach has all the facilities you need for a day at the beach, including modern toilets and change rooms, showers, a big Surf Life-Saving clubhouse, car-parking, and a large grassy park at the back of the sand with a picnic area, barbecues, and playground.
Parking is not free and even though the car park is large, it’s still hard to find a spot because it fills up very quickly.
We stayed at the Beachfront Apartments which was a brilliant location, directly opposite Main Beach. We didn’t have to worry about car parking at all. We walked across the park to the beach every day and it was especially lovely at the end of the day as the light faded and the sky took on the beautiful colours of the evening.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Maria was a great instructor who had us both up, standing and surfing to the shore in the first 30 mins. Super friendly and enthusiastic, with tailored instructions for each of us.
We couldn’t have had a better introduction to surfing and would love to try more. Highly recommended!Written 14 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
