For history buffs! This compact museum showcases glass-slide photos taken during the gold rush in the 1870s-80s. This is a UNESCO-listed collection of photographs. Seriously good. The displays are top rate and modern, and the volunteers are very knowledgeable. Some digital screens to scroll through. Time only permitted me one hour, but next visit I will allow myself 3 hours. The old photos are full of minute detail.

This place is advertised in lots of tourist information in Mudgee, but do be aware that it is a 40 minute drive from Mudgee. Its location is often quoted as Gulgong - it is a 25 minute drive from Gulgong (and a lot less swamped by tourists!). If arriving from the South, it is about 12km after the town of Ulan, past the Moorarben coal mine. It is easy enough to find with sat-nav, but would otherwise be easy to miss the turn-off from Ulan Road. This is a low-key site - don't expect gift shops or toilets. Once at the car-park, there is an information board explaining the significance of the site to the Wiradjuri people and signs for the 600m walk to the art site. It felt somewhat longer than the 600m advertised, but was an interesting walk through the bush. It would NOT be suitable for prams, wheelchairs or anyone who is not sure-footed. Once at the site, there is a boardwalk to facilitate viewing. It was a pleasant stop for us on our way through. We also saw some interesting wild-life including a monitor lizard.

Came here with my kids, 11 and 13 yr old, who were keen to get a gold mining experience in whilst away in Mudgee.
They came away quite satisfied with the gold panning experience and enjoyed walking through the underground features.
Plenty to read about for the parents. I would suggest allowing 30-45 minutes to see everything and do the gold panning.

What a gorgeous store! So many beautiful items in stock as well as a range of fresh produce (eggs, salami, cheeses & drinks). The owner Elise is lovely and extremely helpful. Easy to park at shop - look for the blue banner out front.

Short drive from CBD. Scenic landscape vistas. Picnic shelters and benches with views. Lots of parking. Good photo opportunities.
