Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Vacationer5681337 contributionsWow - what a fantastic day our family had here. The whole experience was 5* - from the fabulous knowledgeable guide Luke, who took us out in a defender and made everything relaxed and fun to the lovely angels in reception who took pity on me thinking I’d not be able to go due to having the dog with us. No! They offered to look after him and took him for a walk whilst we were out for the 3 hour tour. Such a memorable day - we will be back ❤️Written 5 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- corey f1 contributionDone my M4 driving experience today with Alan O’Neill and all I can say is wow. Amazing experience from start to finish! The brief was very clear and instructed at the start to tell us what we would be doing and how, along with getting our helmets and took through the car we was driving. Onto doing the driving ourselves, my instructor Alan was very clear with me, made me feel comfortable from the get go and had confidence in me to push me to my limits! I can not fault him in the slightest. At the end we even got to go for a fast lap with one of the instructors which topped off our day. Would 100% recommend this experience to anyone looking to get a taste of what it’s like to get behind the wheel of a fast car.
Thankyou to all staff involved in our experience, no doubt I’ll be back soon doing it again! Cheers.Written 20 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There’s not a massive amount of the castle left, but there’s an interesting Bronze Age roundhouse reconstruction in the grounds, a museum, shop and a cafe. They often put on activities in school holidays.Written 1 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lovely happy forward going , but very sensible horses and ponies to ride . Their welfare and happiness is really high on the agenda and you can tell when you ride them , that they are happy and calm . It’s a great area for riding on the tracks and part of the forest with very minimal road work . The staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities are great . There are menages too for lessons . Watched a bit of one today and again - lovely ponies and horses . I really recommend this place as a life long rider, previous owner and lover of horses and riding .Written 28 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TTCongleton, UK14 contributionsArrived for a spa day with afternoon tea.
No instructions on what was needed to bring, no list of what was on the afternoon tea
The treatment we all received was fantastic
The afternoon tea was poor, the sandwiches egg two out of three didn’t like, cream cheese and cucumber and ham
We would has for an alternative for egg but we didn’t know. The bread was stale been done a while probably .
Scones were very hard and dry
We were asked if we wanted water with our tea to which we said yes
And then afterwards we had to pay for the water.Written 7 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gillian WCheshire, UK2 contributionsI attended the spa in January as a birthday present/retirement treat for myself and a friend . I spent £198 on the spa, massage and afternoon treat.
I would not recommend the spa at all. It was very poor value for money .The whole spa ,pool area needs to be refurbished. It was cold when sitting around the pool , and in the treatment areas.
I sent the following email to customer services
Message: Hi I am not happy to send this email. However you need to be aware the spa day I booked for myself and good friend did not live up to the expectations I was expecting. I found the changing rooms only had one private room without any seating in. The spa area was not warm, when having my massage I found the room cold .The lady who did my massage showed me into the incorrect room when finished.I was waiting for my friend who was in the other room.I only found this out when another employee asked me if I was waiting for a treatment and informed me I was in the wrong room. The afternoon tea was lovely but I had to ask where it was after 30 minutes of waiting.Apologies for the delay were given . In view of the amount of money I paid the experience I expected to have had fell well short. I was looking at the possibility of becoming a member of the gym etc but unfortunately this will not be the case.
I received a reply stating 25 % would be taken off my next bill if I did a further booking - no chance !!!! The managers of the spa and pool areas had been notified of the complaint.
Following this email I sent a reply requesting some reimbursement of money as I would not be attending Portal again . Three weeks down the line I am still waiting for a response to this email.
I will be sending an email of complaint to the CEO .
For a well known hotel /spa chain I find the customer care absolutely appalling .Tip:Do not bother to waste your moneyWritten 23 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
