As magical as I remember it from 2003!

To die for crystal clear waters and magical marine life.

Easy drive out from town on sealed roads.

    Bathrooms on site.

Charles Knife Canyon is located around 20 km south of Exmouth on the eastern end of Cape Range National Park. You can take the Minilya - Exmouth turnoff road and travel 11 km into to the canyon, along windy road that travels up to and along the rim from which you are afforded remarkable views into the canyon on both sides of the road. This road is accessible with 2wd and doesn't require park entry fee.

We visited midday enjoying the spectacular colours of the rim and gorge walls when the sun poured into the canyon. During a second visit, we arrived at first light enjoying a bit of breakfast during sunrise which you can see from a handful of the pullover lookout points along Charles Knife Rd.

Near the end of the road there is a short 1 km turnoff which leads to a a small carpark, the Thomas Carter Lookout and the Badjarrijarri Trailhead for those seeking to hike up to the remarkable Shothole Canyon Lookout. This is a great hike and viewpoint if you are considering hitting one of the gorge trails around the Cape Range NP and Ningaloo World Heritage Area.

The Mandu Mandu Gorge is one of the many stops you can make along Yardie Creek Road in the Cape Range National Park. Here you will find a 3km loop trail that follows a creek bed into the gorge before climbing up to the rim and returning along higher grounds from which you have nice views into Mandu Mandu Gorge, the surrounding Park grounds and the Ningaloo Coastline in the distance.

We enjoyed this trail. Quite a few black-flanked rock wallabies spotted throughout along with an osprey and other birdlife and interesting vegetarian. The trail is moderately challenging with one fair ascent and some rough ground to cover. Best to have good hiking shoes and essential to bring sufficient water, sunscreen and hat.

Shothole Canyon is north of the Charles Knife Canyon when driving along the Minilya - Exmouth Road. This is a 4wd access road only, travelling deep into the gorge, thus limiting many visitors from being able to drive into the canyon.

If you don't have 4wd, you can still experience the Shothole Canyon by taking the Charles Knife Drive to the Thomas Carter Lookout. This is where you find the Badjarrijarri Trail, a 7km loop trail that heads straight to the Shothole Lookout, where you find yourself upon the rim viewing to the gorge. Views from here are rather remarkable, showcasing the road heading in from the distance along with the depths of the gorge. From here you can either complete the loop trail or turn around and head back to save yourself some time and energy if you are really just wanting to take in the viewpoint.

We have visited a lot of coral reefs, but the size and intensity of corals at Muiron were the most amazing I have ever seen. Water was crystal clear.

As the title says, we got to see three whales at once, including a calf! The crew were lovely too, and the day couldn't have gone better!

This was one of the best day trips we have ever done- we were treated to an amazing Ningaloo snorkelling experience. We were able to spend time in the water with two amazing whale sharks - such an incredible experience. We also saw whales up close, as well a wide range of other marine life in the crystal clear Ningaloo waters. The team were really experienced, friendly and professional and ensured that a wonderful time was had by our entire family. Thank you - we will be back.

Ocean Eco Adventures delivered a fabulous night. Our guide was outgoing, funny and knowledgeable and our captain was chatty and informative.

We were fortunate to see a mother teaching her calf to slap the water. We also had a rainstorm during the cruise, a rare experience in Exmouth. Between the whales, the storm, the sunset and a rainbow, we didn't know which way to look.

Brilliant day with friendly staff, whalesharks and the beautiful exmouth weather! Rebooked due to weather, the day was very memorable with close encounters with amazing whalesharks and an abundance of breaching whales. Great for experienced snorkellers. Fresh prawns and sparkling wine a bonus!!!

We had the most fantastic trip last week, kayaking during the day and camping on the beach each night. I was initially very nervous about the kayaking and the logistics of taking all our gear, keeping it dry etc. But it soon became very easy. Neri, our guide, was absolutely brilliant. She is extremely experienced, put us all at ease, kept us safe and happy, was very knowledgable and accommodating, cooked us delicious meals and worked extremely hard day and night to make it all run smoothly and seamlessly. We had a wonderful time and are very grateful.

I had the best experience with the crew on 'Shack'!
Tyler, the Skipper was fun and professional which made the days even more enjoyable & fun.
Sara W, my dive instructor was a great teacher. Adept at diving and able to pass on her knowledge in a fun environment whilst keeping her students safe. Providing her students with the skills to explore the ocean depths safely and all with a smile on her face.

This tour company was recommended by friends who had had a wonderful experience with this team, so we were keen to use Murray (the captain of the 40-ft vessel, ‘Wave Rider’) and his crew for our adventure. Katie was our tour guide, Tash our photographer, and Jen our deck hand were all smiling, positive, attentive people whose entire focus was keeping us and the marine life safe and us having the best time possible while doing it. AND all three women are marine biologists, so they know their stuff (and were smiling and measured in their responses when guests tried to insist on the correct naming of a particular animal). Live Ningaloo is also big on regenerative tourism - leaving a place better than you found it. This is why they also offer the option for guests to pay for a carbon offset for their ‘seat’ or participation in the tour. To me, this was a no brainer easy ‘yes’.

Having a maximum of 10 guests per tour meant that we all got to be in the water each time a whale shark was spotted; not having to go turn about which the other tours had to do with their groups of 20 was a gift. And on the day we went out, we got to swim 4 times with the whale shark, which was awesome (and it was the same animal each time, which could be determined by its behaviour outlined below).

What made this experience so amazing was the playfulness of this one particular whale shark. Katie had clearly explained procedures in our briefing, and we were all set to form our single file line in the water ready to swim alongside the whale shark as it floated past, never in front - tour swimmers are instructed never to impact on the natural behaviour of the whale shark, including being in their way when they are swimming so that they would have to divert to avoid us. Got it, stay out of the way of the whale shark, be a stealthy observer. We were set. The only thing was, no one gave the memo to the whale shark. Instead of the beast swimming in a straight line and the various tour groups taking turns getting in on the side by side action, this whale shark was circling, which meant swimmers were constantly trying to get out of its way. It was like the whale shark was intrigued by the bubbles generated by our fins as we tried to avoid it and was following these in play. And this happened each of the four times we got in water. It was hilarious and one of the most wonderful wildlife encounters of our lives.

We enjoyed two snorkels inside the lagoon, the first was at the beginning of the tour at Posiedon’s Garden and the second was at the end of the tour after lunch (delicious, by the way). During the snorkel time, there was an abundance of sightings of different sea life, including an endangered wedgefish, which was very exciting! While on board, we also saw turtles, humpback whales, dolphins and dugongs. I cannot imagine a more perfect day, and it’s one that I will remember for the rest of my life.
