As magical as I remember it from 2003!

To die for crystal clear waters and magical marine life.

Easy drive out from town on sealed roads.

    Bathrooms on site.

Charles Knife Canyon is located around 20 km south of Exmouth on the eastern end of Cape Range National Park. You can take the Minilya - Exmouth turnoff road and travel 11 km into to the canyon, along windy road that travels up to and along the rim from which you are afforded remarkable views into the canyon on both sides of the road. This road is accessible with 2wd and doesn't require park entry fee.

We visited midday enjoying the spectacular colours of the rim and gorge walls when the sun poured into the canyon. During a second visit, we arrived at first light enjoying a bit of breakfast during sunrise which you can see from a handful of the pullover lookout points along Charles Knife Rd.

Near the end of the road there is a short 1 km turnoff which leads to a a small carpark, the Thomas Carter Lookout and the Badjarrijarri Trailhead for those seeking to hike up to the remarkable Shothole Canyon Lookout. This is a great hike and viewpoint if you are considering hitting one of the gorge trails around the Cape Range NP and Ningaloo World Heritage Area.

I Had the best day out with the Ningaloo discovery team . We swam 3 times with a whale shark and had some amazing snorkelling . It was a fun interesting day , felt super safe in the water at all times. We even finished with a glass of bubbly on the top deck looking at the beautiful Ningaloo Reef 🪸.
    Definitely will recommend them 👍🪸🤿

About a week ago, my husband and I had an AMAZING time flying with Gavin and Duncan. The flight itself was so fun + thrilling + scenic + informative + just wonderful!

They were both fun and funny characters who clearly LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE what they do, and it was hard not to absorb their good humor and wonderful moods on top of our own excitement.

The capabilitites of Duncan and Gavin were sensational - we felt safe and cared for, and fully relaxed the whole time - and even got to 'do a little bit of flying' for a few minutes towards the end.

I sat with Gavin and enjoyed his endless enthusiasm for, and info on everything - Exmouth history, reef info, marine biology, marine animal sighting stories, etc.

It was also SUPER cool that both pilots had a GREAT digi camera with zoom on board, PLUS the 'go pro' attached to the wing, and when the flight was over, copies of all photos were shared with each of us - so we didnt even have to worry about bringing a camera or taking shots - we could just fully engage and enjoy the journey :)

I would 110% recommend doing a Birds Eye View flight (we did the 90 min flight over the cape ranges and around the cape coast over the reef) and will likely do another on each future visit to Exmouth.

THANK YOU SO MUCH Gavin + Duncan for a highly memorable and totally fun day out with you guys! WE LOVVVVVEEEEDDDDD it!!!

We had the most fantastic trip last week, kayaking during the day and camping on the beach each night. I was initially very nervous about the kayaking and the logistics of taking all our gear, keeping it dry etc. But it soon became very easy. Neri, our guide, was absolutely brilliant. She is extremely experienced, put us all at ease, kept us safe and happy, was very knowledgable and accommodating, cooked us delicious meals and worked extremely hard day and night to make it all run smoothly and seamlessly. We had a wonderful time and are very grateful.

Fantastic trip. The enthusiastic owner/captain Mikhali, was both knowledge and fun to travel with. His expert guidance soon had us spotting the chattering fruit bats, elegant egrets and the stars of the show, the rock wallaby.
The trip ambles up the saltwater creek. Bring water and hats.
    Good value too.

This tour company was recommended by friends who had had a wonderful experience with this team, so we were keen to use Murray (the captain of the 40-ft vessel, ‘Wave Rider’) and his crew for our adventure. Katie was our tour guide, Tash our photographer, and Jen our deck hand were all smiling, positive, attentive people whose entire focus was keeping us and the marine life safe and us having the best time possible while doing it. AND all three women are marine biologists, so they know their stuff (and were smiling and measured in their responses when guests tried to insist on the correct naming of a particular animal). Live Ningaloo is also big on regenerative tourism - leaving a place better than you found it. This is why they also offer the option for guests to pay for a carbon offset for their ‘seat’ or participation in the tour. To me, this was a no brainer easy ‘yes’.

Having a maximum of 10 guests per tour meant that we all got to be in the water each time a whale shark was spotted; not having to go turn about which the other tours had to do with their groups of 20 was a gift. And on the day we went out, we got to swim 4 times with the whale shark, which was awesome (and it was the same animal each time, which could be determined by its behaviour outlined below).

What made this experience so amazing was the playfulness of this one particular whale shark. Katie had clearly explained procedures in our briefing, and we were all set to form our single file line in the water ready to swim alongside the whale shark as it floated past, never in front - tour swimmers are instructed never to impact on the natural behaviour of the whale shark, including being in their way when they are swimming so that they would have to divert to avoid us. Got it, stay out of the way of the whale shark, be a stealthy observer. We were set. The only thing was, no one gave the memo to the whale shark. Instead of the beast swimming in a straight line and the various tour groups taking turns getting in on the side by side action, this whale shark was circling, which meant swimmers were constantly trying to get out of its way. It was like the whale shark was intrigued by the bubbles generated by our fins as we tried to avoid it and was following these in play. And this happened each of the four times we got in water. It was hilarious and one of the most wonderful wildlife encounters of our lives.

We enjoyed two snorkels inside the lagoon, the first was at the beginning of the tour at Posiedon’s Garden and the second was at the end of the tour after lunch (delicious, by the way). During the snorkel time, there was an abundance of sightings of different sea life, including an endangered wedgefish, which was very exciting! While on board, we also saw turtles, humpback whales, dolphins and dugongs. I cannot imagine a more perfect day, and it’s one that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Dave rocks it! The tour was informative and fun. Yardie Creek was stunning. Wallaby's and birds galore. Counted 30 wallaby. Visited a lighthouse built in 1905. Very cool. Incredible views along the drive. Must do activity.
