The word "kayaking" has never been a part of my vocabulary, but when in Maine – I had the pleasure of experiencing kayaking when the company I work for sent us on an employee appreciation trip this summer. While I've always been big on watching large bodies of water ebb and flow as I sink into deep thought, I've never been too keen on hang out in the middle of it. But in my experience, the reward typically resides outside of my comfort zone.
This is why I appreciated the way the family-owned business operated in terms of gathering us up and thoroughly discussing what we can all expect, whether experienced or a first time kayaker. Their primary focus was safety, as was mine. So I really appreciated the quality gear and instructions for how to get in and out of the kayak, along with the proper ways to paddle and steer, etc.
They leave the floor open for you to ask questions before setting out into the water. And one thing I really appreciated, was that they don't leave you to fend for yourself. There are destination points on the trip, and Will (the owner/guide) is sure to keep within close proximity as you embark ahead. This allows him to keep an eye on things while taking the time to get to know everyone. This also allowed him a chance to point out the seals and explain their curiosity with us. It was pretty cool to have them “submarine” underneath our kayaks, following us around around and peeking their heads up from time to time.
That, paired with the golden sunset over the warm ocean as we let our kayak's sway in place, was epic. That moment was aligned with part of my motivation for coming to Maine – Clarity. And nothing humbles me more than the magnitude of the sun and sea dancing together.
I had a lot to say about the company and the folks who ran it, that my girlfriend was excited to experience it for herself – which she thoroughly enjoyed. 'The Sunset Tour' was worth it both times!
I highly recommend that anyone looking for a variety of kayaking tours provided by a family-owned company who really takes the time to make you feel welcome, safe, and comfortable on the water while having a great experience, go with Ospreys Echo Sea Kayaking. Beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery, very satisfying paddling--about 12 miles over the course of the day. He is a great guide, clearly wants to meet our expectations. offered lots of choices (we were pretty much game for anything), knowledgeable about the islands, the wildlife, the water, everything. it was the best paddling day in a year of lots of wonderful paddling--we hope to make an annual pilgrimage to repeat the day.
