The food service was disgraceful. We travelled from kansas city to LA and back in a roomette. Meals were included and all we awful. The meals were microwaved and either cooked so long a person was unable to cut the EGGS! Other times it was undercooked so it was a gooey mess. Very disappointed especially due to the cost.
The room attendants were not helpful.

After a 12 year hiatus using airlines instead of Amtrak, the airlines have driven me back to Amtrak. Unfortunately their CEO since 2017 doesn't like long haul trains, perhaps since he formerly was CEO of Delta Airlines.
I rode first-class in a roomette which as a lone traveler I love. The car attendants in both directions were deserving of 5 stars. I can only remember the name Jay as the eastbound attendant.
I had to deduct a star for a few reasons. One is that midway on the trip west the bathrooms in my sleeper car all were closed by the same plumbing issue. Fortunately there was a crew sleeper car where we could somewhat conveniently go.
Another was with the dining car on the eastbound trip for the dinner meal. Continental Amtrak trains cross into several time zones that should not be an issue, yet it was. We were on Mountain Time when I put in my seating reservation, yet would be on Central Time for dinner. I opted for an 8 p.m. dinner.
The dining car was operating on Mountain time well into the Central Time Zone and ran 45 minutes late in addition so instead of being seated close to 8 p.m. those with that reservation time actually were seated at 9:45 p.m.
The service in the dining car also deserves close to 5 stars except for the above glitch. All meals excluding alcoholic beverages are included in the price paid by sleeping car passengers. While the menu offerings are limited, what I ordered was very good, although westbound the steak I ordered cooked medium rare was closer to well done, still very good.
Yes, Amtrak trains often run late. That is something I expect since Amtrak is at the mercy of freight haulers, some of whom are not kind to Amtrak. And, yes, Amtrak needs to upgrade some of their older cars.
Nevertheless, a rail trip should be on everyone's bucket list for at least one trip. I'll be taking more trips until their CEO, or our government, completely ruins the experience and plunges American passenger rail travel to the lowest of all developed countries.
One added benefit is that you will usually be greeted and assisted, if necessary, by a person with a friendly smile as opposed to standing in line with a good chance of being groped by a TSA agent and having who knows who rummaging through your luggage.
There is no smoking anywhere on the train and the smoking/fresh air stops are very limited.
As a solo traveler I prefer to keep the bed set up in my roomette. When I want a chair there is usually one to be found not far away in the lounge/observation car.
When dining you will likely be set at a table with four people. In my experience better than 90 percent of the time there is good, pleasant - sometimes informative - conversation.
Sleeping car passengers are allowed to consume adult beverages in their rooms, as opposed to coach passengers who may only consume adult beverages in the lounge and dining cars and only those they purchase in those cars, and they are New York City pricey.

We booked a private rail car from LA to Portland. Sleeping on a train was on my wife's bucket list. Exceeded our expectations. Food was fabulous! Cheaper than Amtrak.
