Our bilingual guide Juan was excellent, very knowledgeable. He made our trip an unforgettable experience. We didn’t get to do the whale watching (January is out of whale season), but nevertheless it was so worth it. We got to see sea lions, sea elephants and penguins. Also guanacos (similar to lamas), patagonic hares, armadillos, patagonic ostriches, owls... Our driver was also very good, and would be very attentive for wild animals, pointing them out to us, stopping or going very slowly to take pictures. Our van was comfortable, with good A/C. A wonderful day. Note: even if the weather may seem hot in Madryn, do take a jacket, as it may get very windy (and thus cold) momentarily.

We had a great day. Our tour operator Hugo was fantastic. He obviously loves what he does and his positivity made the day. We saw hundreds of animals. Worth every penny.

While on a South American Cruise, one of the stops was Puerta Madryn and we opted for an excursion to this wildlife refuge. It is one of the largest Magellan Penguin colonies in the world with 400,000 birds living there. They spend from August to March there melting and raising chicks before there Winter migration. It's about a two hour drive from Purta Madryn to the park, with some comfort stops. The reserve itself is very nice with restrooms and a few small shops and cafes. You walk among the penguins on trail and boardwalks. Easy and level for the most part. About 2 km round trip. Saw thousands of penguin. The birds were close; easy to see and photograph. Note that this is in a remote area and most visitors arrive by Tour bus, so it is very busy. Well worth seeing if you love wildlife.

The highlight was seeing the penguins, which we were able to do up close. Amazing how they just stood there and let us take our pictures. Also saw Sea Lions and seals. Biggest negative is the two hour drive to get there and another two hours to get back. Most of it on bumpy, gravel, dirt roads...which was not the most comfortable. Had a okay lunch at a local restaurant. Served a salad and meat. Some tables got meat and French fries...we were not given a choice. Also had some red wine. Many liked it, but we were not impressed. In retrospect, we might have preferred a boat trip around the peninsula and taken our photos from the boat...would have been more comfortable.

The boat ride to see the toninas was cheaper to book during the day trip (about a third of rhe online trip advisor option price) and well worth doing as the boat ride itself was comfortable and we saw many toninas. The penguin colony is a must see as this is the largest accessible colony anywhere. Our guide was very good but was let down by not having a working microphone which made listening to her difficult on the often bumpy and noisy minivan drive.

We did this as a shore excursion and we booked it directly with El Pedral.
The El Pedral team at the Puerto Madryn port were well signed and we found our way to our guide, Rodrigo who directed s to the small 'bus we went touring within.
Rodrigo was well spoken and an excellent guide giving us great information on the excursion.
We saw some wildlife on the journey to El Pedral property.
Our first stop was to observe a small nmber of Elephant Seals laying below our cliff top observation point and then we proceeded to the area of the light house.
Then came the reason for our journey - the walk, maybe 1500m or more, to the area where the penguins were located. First we saw moulting birds and then more and more and finally we reached the pebble beach where there were many penguins close to the line of surf. A few walked close to us while we stood upon the beach.
After we returned to our bus we went to the El Pedral buildings where we had a lunch which included Argentinian style BBQed lamb and wine.
This was the best excursion we have ever been on in our 6 cruises.

Don't book tour for Punta Tombo or other Puerto Madryn tours on the web! There are plenty of tour business in Puerto Madryn, and they are open all the time, also late at night in the weekends. You can book trips with a bigger bus, a minivan or private car. The cost when booking locally is less than half the price from booking on the web, via Tripadvisor. I booked the Punta Tombo tour on the web and paid 170 USD. The tour was then in turn arranged by a travel agency, RipioTurismo in Buenos Aires which did not communicate, did not respond to mails and had a Spanish only switchboard (I don't speak Spanish). I anyway figured out from the web site, I would be picked up by a local guide at 7.15 from the hotel. No-one came to pick me up however and by 9 I went with another Punta Tombo-tour, arranged on the spot by a guide who was picking up another couple of people. I paid 60 USD for a day with an excellent English-speaking guide in a mini-van. So Madryn is easy-going and you don't need to worry to arrange beforehand. There are plenty of tours to choose from and not expensive. Don't book tours online through Tripadvisor/RipioTurismo since they may rip you off as happened to me.
