I'd heard all sorts of horror stories about New Delhi train station and was expecting to either be crushed in the crowds or scammed at every turn. The truth is neither happened. The station is obviously busy and everything that comes with that but, despite being a very obvious foreign tourists complete with giant backpacks, we weren't hassled at all beyond a few people asking if we needed a taxi. Maybe we just got lucky but I didn't see anything dodgy going on. There was a massive queue to get through security at the main entrance in the middle of the station but there are smaller entrance halls at the left and right of the building which we walked straight through so it's worth checking these if you want to skip the lines. The only thing is these smaller entrance halls don't have the boards telling you the departure platforms so you may need to check in the main entrance hall first. Once you know your platform, everything is clearly signposted in English and Hindi so it's pretty easy to find where you need to go. It certainly isn't the cleanest or most modern train station in the world but you're only passing through so I don't think it matters that much. One thing I would say though is don't wear sandals or flip flops. I was slipping and sliding in puddles of who knows what so I was glad to be wearing trainers!

I don’t know how many in Delhi are aware of the existence or of the whereabouts of this railway station, yes it is in Delhi but it is very unlike other Delhi stations. In addition to EMUs there are just a few trains that stop at this station but as these trains do not stop at any other station in Delhi it is important to know the limitations of this station. This is a small station and except for mandatory toilet/water /shade etc there are no other facilities for passengers. No shop for food or water, no cloakroom or waiting room etc, the only food available at this station is outside the station building and that is CHANA-MURMURA only. Getting an auto rickshaw may be a difficult task at odd hours.

Fastest route from Delhi to Agra, and you get to depart from the slightly calmer H. Nizamuddin rather than the central New Delhi station. The way to Agra was on time, while the way back took an extra 10-15 minutes. But compared to what I’m used to in the U.S., it wasn’t bad. I think it would be a more comfortable and faster ride than being stuck in a car or bus in Indian traffic.

The food is a bit sad-looking, but I like that breakfast and dinner came with flavorful Indian hot meals. Yes, the tray they first give you is depressing, but the staff then bring out little reheated dishes of more flavorful Indian food. I didn’t get sick at all though I avoided the raw fruits and vegetables or the piping hot milk. Note you can ask for instant coffee rather than the default tea bag, but you have to ask. And all the staff I met were very friendly.

The only little hiccup was the bathroom, which broke. Fortunately there is one in each car (two if you’re happy to go “old school”). But they often had no toilet paper. The staff would supplement with paper napkins, but maybe that’s why our WC was dysfunctional lol

If you’re expecting first-class train service then no, this isn’t it. But it’s a fast, safe, and comfortable ride for a day trip to Agra, and do you really want to be stuck in a car for 2-3 hours in Indian traffic?

Note: I booked tickets via Expedia so I’m sure it’s a little more confusing if you do it yourself. This is a review of the train ride only!

We arrived at Delhi Station to board the 7.40am train to Kalka and there we waited. Eventually we received advice to change platforms and began the mad rush up stairways, escalators and across footbridges to eventually reach the train which was already boarding. At approx. 8.10am we slowly departed and after approx. 30sec came to a halt and there we stayed for a further 40 minutes while the route was cleared for the train. The central aisle in the carriage was repeatedly leaned, pity that the same attention had not been given to the upholstery of the seats. I managed to obtain a newspaper so that I wouldn't have direct contact with the green dried stain on my seat. Breakfast was served after some time and quite enjoyable fare. Four stops along the route, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala Cant, Chandigarh and finally our destination Kalka, 63 minutes late. According to the TV monitor in the coach, speeds did not reach 100km. Luckily the Shivalik Express Toy Train was held over for our group and other passengers travelling onward to Shimla. Not the best introduction to Indian Train services.

We are train travel fans. & Shatabdi is one of the two most comfortable trains in India. We took the Habibganj Shatabdi from New Delhi to Bhopal. We travelled in the Executive Class which was extremely comfortable.

We were looked after well & served breakfast & lunch. The train was, unfortunately, late but that was due to flooding in a few parts that we crossed. Railways does have a big task at hand to ensure the train is kept clean at all times.

We would love to travel again by the Shatabdi Express.
