It's also a lovely spot for wildlife; the site is next to one of the huge lakes and we saw egrets, kingfishers, various butterflies, Brahminy kites and different lizards.
Polonnaruwa is an amazing place and the obvious attraction is it's stunning archaeological site with the kings palace, library, baths, council house etc.

Its definitely one of the most impressive sights at Polonnaruwa.

Another amazing site and a must visit if you are here to see the ruins.

Part of the Polonnaruwa site is the Kings council chamber where the kings would assemble and gather the local rulers and listen to them, and make his final rulings.
This building has impressive carvings and is one to visit during the tour of the site.

One of many sites we visited with our driver on a culture packed tour of Sri Lanka.
Very impressive statue of Parakramabahu 1 who have built the Parakrama Samudra Reservoir , this can be seen free of charge as it's out of the site .
#13 of 29 Sights & Landmarks in Polonnaruwa
It's the last monument you come to at the bottom end of the site.
This Image house is about the furthest of historical sites within the Polonnaruwa ruined city.

The pillars are lotus shaped and form a beautiful view among the ruins.
Standing there made me realise the huge scale of the site.

(NB: Stalls looked predominantly like drinks/snacks...and probably souvenirs too!) Overall the pond was excellent by itself, but you would see the other sites here - better as a planned day tour seeing a multitude...
This has to be one of the best parts of this vast site and it is worth time walking to it and around it.
#17 of 29 Sights & Landmarks in Polonnaruwa
Its an interesting little bit of medevial architecture and an important stop on the route to many other historical sites nearby.
On a day when the rest of the site was swarming with people, this site was completely peaceful and empty.
