This beautiful building used to be "Brazil's White House". Located in Laranjeiras, one of Rio's exclusive areas, it takes you back a couple of centuries! There's a guided tour inside the Palace and its walking distance to the Laranjeiras Palace and the Flamengo area. Nice area for a stroll during the day!

Arquivo Nacional is a federal office that keeps files that encompass all written history of Brazil. It is located in a beautiful building open in 1868 to house money-making facilities. It is large, spacious and has very high walls and a quiet garden in its backyard. Photograph shows are usually held in the promises. It is a piece of Old Rio in the very center of the city, facing the square where Brazil changed from an Empire to a Republic.

If you are walking through the City Center to visit some of the old buildings, you should include this one. It was built in the 19th century to be a branch of Banco do Brasil but it appears that the bank was going through a dry spell and the place was transferred to the federal government. The good thing is that the construction was preserved and you can see the fantastic cast iron tellers windows, chandelier, beautiful staircase.
