Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great experience! Walking through the famous Senbon Torii felt like stepping into different and sacred place. Climbing up the mountain was a bit challenging for me, but the beautiful views along the way made it all worth it. It was very peaceful and refreshing. After visiting the shrine, I stopped by some nearby shops and bought a fox-shaped charm I’d love to visit again someday.

It is fascinating to see a wooden building in the middle of a man-made lake, completely in gold. You can only walk through the garden around the temple, but despite the hordes of tourists, there is sort of magical vibe here, due to the combination of colours that comes together (from the lake, the temple, the tree leaves etc).

First things first. You really need to be early here. You literally will not be able to see anything as from 9:30 onwards, even on a weekday, as the place gets infested with both local and foreign tourists as well as school classes and local day trippers.

But it’s worth getting up early and walking up the steps. The views are amazing and despite the foot traffic the shrine gets, it gets maintained well.

The connecting Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka areas are essentially streets lined with tourist shops, but it somehow has a cosy atmosphere to it (but also very crowded).

    It is a magical place.
The main hall contains a big Buddha sitting on a lotus flower surrounding 1001 (!) standing golden Kannons (Goddess of Mercy) about human height made from cypress wood almost 1000 years ago. It's a shining army! The statues have 21 pairs of arms which symbolizes 1000 arms. There are different objects in the statues' hands. The statues have many faces (there are 11 small heads attached to the Main head). There are many other statues: G-d of Wind, G-d of Thunder, Heavenly Kings, etc. Some are playing musical instruments, some have wings, some have horse head on their head, some have fin-like brows, etc.
Unfortunately, you cannot take a picture there.
There is also a nice small garden outside.
    Allow at least an hour.

I wasn't familiar with this temple but I had seen it recommended in a travel guide. It was on the way from the silver pavilion so we dropped by. I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this temple was. It's very spacious so you will need some time to explore everything. Unlike Ginkakuji, this temple was almost empty, so we could really enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Bit of a walk from our hotel but worth it in the end.

The temple is stunning and the park is beautiful. There is so much to walk around and see.

It was a very popular spot and there was a good mix of westerners and locals.

This place is nice but not a must. It has a five-story Pagoda (the tallest in Japan), Kondo (main hall with 3 Buddhas), Kodo (a hall with 21 Buddhas, one of them is riding an elephant - no pictures of Buddha image is allowed), a small garden, and Kanchi-in Temple (house interior consisting of almost empty rooms with tatami mats, sliding doors, and an ink painting of attacking eagles on the wall - take off your shoes at the entrance).
    Allow at least an hour.

A kinda underrated gem in Kyoto. Despite easy access by Kyoto Metro, people seem to forget this temple amidst the glamour of the Kyoto Trio of Kiyomizudera, Fushimi Inari Taisha and Kinakuji. On the plus side, that gives this temple respite from hordes of tourists and a peaceful vibe

Nice place to visit in order to see something different! This zen / buddist temple charges an 800 fee to enter, but is worth to see the twin dragons, green garden and zen garden! Wouldn’t hesitate in recommending.

The main attraction here no doubt are the lush gardens in traditional Japanese design. It’s also interesting to learn about the history of Bodhidharma, whose picture feels a bit out of place as it reminds one of a comic book character while in fact he was said to have transmitted the Zen teachings from India to China.

The main hall has a large painting of a dragon on the ceiling, which is also what the temple is famous for. Be mindful the main hall is not open every day, so in case you are coming for this, do your research on the temple’s website to see what dates the main hall is open to public.

The main draw is the gravel and rock garden that was first laid out over 500 years ago and has been maintained with no weeds or grass in site ever since
The garden and the lovely tea house screens tended to lead to calm and introspection despite the crowds

The temple is one of a kind, it was very quiet when we were there early afternoon late August, There are some larger statues, the numerous raken (~1200) make this place special, none is the same and they are spread over the hills of the temple. Not explained: visitor’s leave money with some of the raken, one even wore jewelry.
It is a very special place to visit, keep it that way.

This was our second visit to Kyoto but first to this temple. We were very impressed by its serene elegance. First stop was the temple, nearly on our own, then the pond on a still day, then a giant Buddha, and on to the bamboo, which saved us the long trip to Arashiyama. Memorable and recommended.

It is very beautiful, flowers, rocks, trees everywhere. Very beautiful. It was pretty hot, basically why I put this rating down a star is because too hot. If today is a good weather then it would probably be a 5star
