Really enjoyed visiting the fort. Stunning surroundings and really interesting history. The site is huge and there is so much to see, walk around and learn on the audio guide. We read that we’d need around 4 hours to get around and thought that seemed too long, however we were engaged the whole time. We really enjoyed our time there and stopped at the cafe on the way out for a lassi. Recommended!

Jaswant Thada, often called the “Taj Mahal of Marwar,” is a serene and exquisite memorial located in Jodhpur, built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. This cenotaph is a stunning example of architectural brilliance, crafted from intricately carved marble sheets that glow when sunlight falls upon them. It serves as the cremation ground for the royal family of Marwar, adding a deep sense of historical and cultural significance to its allure.

The cenotaph is surrounded by lush gardens, a small lake, and charming gazebos, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Inside, portraits of Marwar rulers offer a glimpse into the region’s royal heritage, further enhancing its historical charm. Jaswant Thada is conveniently located on the way to Mehrangarh Fort, making it an easy and worthwhile stop. The large parking space nearby ensures accessibility for visitors, making the visit seamless and enjoyable.

With an entry fee of just INR 30, Jaswant Thada provides an affordable yet enriching experience. Its peaceful surroundings and breathtaking architecture make it a perfect retreat from the hustle of the city, offering visitors a chance to appreciate Jodhpur’s rich history and artistry. A visit to Jaswant Thada is not just a sightseeing experience but a journey into the royal past of Marwar, leaving an indelible mark on every traveler.

A small vignette of Jodhpur’s past. It is a quick 1 hr dash through the museum to get a a sense of the city’s evolution. I would recommend taking a guide especially as the prices are listed on the ticket board (so you don’t have to negotiate)

Excellent. Must do this tour. It’s a private tour and not of the typical places but more meandering nooks and crannies. Bantu is very knowledgeable and kind. It’s the perfect length and the perfect amount of information.

I had been to Chand Baori, a few days before, which is the oldest and largest stepwell. It was wonderful, but of course you weren’t able to enter the stepwell, which is the best way to preserve it.

However, I was delighted to see that this smaller stepwell in Jodhpur has free entry, and you can actually go in!

Some boys were having fun jumping in the water. I wouldn’t do that, personally, because stagnant water seems risky, but I’m sure it felt refreshing to them.

I’d definitely recommend going for the novelty of being in a stepwell. They are unique to this region of India. You won’t see anything like this in other parts of the world.

Amazing views and lovely to spend a couple of hours exploring the park. There are a couple of well marked trails. I only wish they opened a little earlier in October November to avoid the heat post 9 am.

This was clearly once very grand but is now quite run down. Entry is cheap at just 25 rupees for foreigner but it needs work to restore. The water is mostly full of slim and stinks, fountains largely don’t work and areas overgrown. Still worth a visit but no more than an hour.

We really enjoyed this art class which took us around 3 hours. ‘Lentil man’ was helpful in showing us what to do and we both produced nice little painting by the end of the session.
