This is a museum within a bunker exploring the history of modern Albania mainly from the police point of view and its role and effect in history, particularly after the establishment of the Hodja communist regime, where the country became totally cut off from the modern world around it. It depicts the efforts of the police (and secret police) to control the population by all means and prohibit the "escape" from the country of any citizen daring to attempt to do so by pain of death. All enemies of the state, real and imaginary where subjected to executions, labour camps and severe interrogation under torture. All this is artfully depicted by photographic evidence, interviews of survivors and various material, providing a vivid picture of events and a grim reminder of the achievements of dictatorial regimes. It is interesting to see how much Albania has prospered after the fall of the communist regime in 1991.

On our last morning in Tirana we decided to take the cable car ride up the mountain. It was not busy so no need to queue. The 15 - 20 minute ride is both spectacular and comfortable. The price of 8 euros per person for a return ticket is good value. There is plenty to do once you get to the top. I would highly recommend this activity.

Many of the things to see and do in Tirana are focused around Skanderbeg Square. It is a huge open space with various different facets on its periphery - gardens, statues, monuments etc. If you visit Tirana, you won’t be able to avoid it. And that’s a good thing.

What an amazing place to have in the centre of a capital city. This is a huge park with woodlands, walkway and a beautiful lake. A great place to relax and enjoy nature.

This is a museum of atrocities committed by the secret police under Hodja during his long reign. The role of this unit was to spy against the citizens and visiting foreigners to assure that there was no dissent real or imaginary against the regime. It depicts all the various means it employed in doing so within an otherwise leafy villa in the centre of the city.

Like many other national history museums, this one is very patriotic. Besides from that, it is informative. The history shown is mainly poltical leaders and warriors. It shows very little of the life of ordinary people.

As its name implies, this Eastern Christian Church is not subject to the authority of an outside patriarch or archbishop. Its gleaming white exterior with veritable minarets and its dome will harken you back to Ottoman times. The interior is undergoing some renovation but its ceiling is striking for its colours. Most of the church was roped off but you could still get a good look at the iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary. It was a smaller interior than I would have imagined from the outside. In a real irony, it is opposite the House of Leaves. I did hear the bells at 0730 Sunday calling the faithful to prayer.

Modern take on the bazaar of former times, this sanitised version of the bazaar is very nicely presented and full of colourful fruit, vegetables and Albanian souvenirs. The whole area has been renovated and there are some nice cafes and bars there too.

We could not have gone to Albania without visiting Skanderbeg Square; it would have been disrespectful and plain disregard for Albania's history and how far they have come.

The square is spacious and represents a true honorary statement, and the statue is a fantastic added tribute.

There are no masterpieces here, but lots of better-then-OK local pieces and socialist realist items. There are no descriptors of the pieces on display (OK, a few, in Albanian) and you will see entire walls covered with paintings, or shelves full of statues. Has a warehouse feel. Needs a curator and some money.

In the downtown area, you could be anywhere on Planet Earth in this shopping mall. High-end (but not too high-end — this isn’t Beverly Hills) you can find most anything you need here. Has several ATMs, decent toilets (with seats!), food, etc. Open 9am to 10pm daily.

We truly enjoyed wondering around this quaint little buzzing street. There was so many cute little shops, and some nice artworks around. Really nice place to just chill and people watch.

In 1988 the structure opened as the Enver Hoxha Museum who died in 1988. Originally it was to serve as a museum about the legacy of the dictator, but after the communism in Albania collapsed in 1991 it was used as exhibition center. Since then it went to rack and ruin and nowadays it is discussed what to do: demolish the structure or renovate and use for new purpose - one of the ideas is IT center for youth. Whatever your impression, it is clearly a landmark of Tirana.
