They are almost always free to the public, come with brochures and at times audio downloads. Presently there is an exhibition titled Extended Figure, featuring masterpieces of 20th century Chinese artist, Lalan (until 21 Sept 2021). Exhibition hours are 11am to 6pm daily.
Lalan (Xie Jing-lan) was born in China but spent most of her years in France where she developed a particular form of artistry known as integrated art which incorporates painting, music and dance and brings elements of east and west art forms together. LaLan's works creative contemporary works are peculiar compositions and worth spending time to view and ponder upon.
The exhibition showcases around 30 works which are spaced out nicely in the Chantal Miller Gallery on the upper floor of the Asia Society compound. The gallery is nicely curated, lighting too bright on individual works, limiting photograph taking a bit. However, overall, it is a good exhibition that can be viewed comfortably in 30-45 minutes.Written 18 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - BradJillHong Kong, China146,637 contributionsThe Jao Tsung-I Academy is a hillside compound of heritage buildings along Castle Peak Road in Lai Chi Kok that were revitalised by the HK Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture (HKIPCC) and named after the late prominent scholar Jao Tsung-I.
The academy was opened to the public in phases between 2012-14 and now features three hillside levels of Grade 3 protected historic buildings that function as a museum with exhibition galleries, activity centre, restaurant, coffee shop and even a hotel. The outdoor grounds are open from 8am to 10pm daily, exhibition halls are open from 10am to 6pm daily. No entry fee required.
The lower level is where you find the Main Gallery which is a testimony to the life and scholarly works of Jao Tsung-I. There is also a Heritage Hall where you can learn about the history of the area and buildings which date back to the late 19th century when a Qing Dynasty Customs house was located here. Later buildings, including those you see today, served as a labourers' quarters, prison, quarantine station, infectious disease hospital and lastly a psychiatric rehab centre which was eventually closed in 2004. There is a statue of Jao Tsung-I and a small but beautiful lotus pond here.
The second level is where you find a series of buildings including another exhibition hall, presently presenting information about Chinese language characters, activity rooms, Hope of Joy restaurant and Coffeeflow. Continuing to the third level, you will find the Heritage Lodge. - BradJillHong Kong, China146,637 contributionsThe JC Contemporary Museum at Tai Kwun continues to host a handful of interesting art exhibitions each year. Exhibitions primarily feature local artists and are usually free for the public. Opening hours are 11am to 7pm daily.
First and foremost, the architectural design of the JC Contemporary building is interesting, the exterior is worth a few minutes to enjoy. The interior is centred by a four storey spiralling staircase from which various floors and galleries spin off as you make your way upward. Gallery rooms are spacious, lighting in general is good although we at times feel it shines too brightly on the displayed works, creating glare and making it a bit difficult to take nice photos. Otherwise, it is a very good use of art space in Hong Kong.
We visit 2-3 times a year and almost always find at least one of the exhibitions very interesting. Recently we much enjoyed the INK CITY exhibition (23 April to 1 August 2021) featuring works by artists using ink art to present and articulate a social voice regarding living together in a crowded community and dealing with our urban environment here in Hong Kong.
The exhibition includes a thorough brochure which presents the various artists and describes their respective works that are on display. In addition to traditional ink art, there are installations and video representations that we enjoyed viewing and learning about. Enjoyed quite a few of the works on display, finding Howie Tsui's Retainers of Anarchy (2018) and animated Parallax Chambers (2018-ongoing) to be particularly thought provoking. In the end, we found this exhibition well worth 30-45 minutes as part of a visit to the JC Contemporary Museum at Tai Kwun.

Oil Street Art Space is an interesting attraction where you can enjoy a Grade II Historic Building that has been preserved and repurposed into a contemporary art exhibition centre in the Fortress Hill area of the city. The venue is open from 10am to 8pm (Tues - Sun) and 2pm to 8pm (Mon).
What you find here is the old clubhouse of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. The small cluster of buildings were constructed in 1908. They feature red brick exterior and arts and crafts architectural style of the early 20th century. The Yacht Club moved locations in 1939. The property was then taken over by the HK government until 2010 when it was designated for refurbishment and future use as a visual arts and education centre.
The Oi! venue opened to the public in 2013 and is free for the public to visit. There are four small galleries with changing contemporary, visual art and education minded exhibitions. They are usually interesting and worth spending a few minutes to enjoy. - ciciart1 contributionI was first attracted by two large KAWS sculptures that I saw from a long distance away. As I came closer, I saw a sculpture that looks exactly like a security guard!! The quality of these sculptures amused me and I went in. I didn't realise that this was Opera Gallery until the staff told me. Their collections range from young up-and-coming artists to well-known masters. I was quite impressed, especially having been to their London location.
The staff I talked to are quite young but experienced, and gave me detailed explanations. A handful of art galleries a found at H Queens. You will also find 8-9 restaurants as well as a rooftop bar called Plume. Dang Wen Li by NYC's Dominique Ansel opened up a new flagship bakery on the ground floor last year. A large Lululemon did the same just recently. Both see good sized crowds at the H Queen's building.

No pics allowed inside but this exhibition has some truly beautiful paintings. Not here! The member of staff working was very friendly and chatty about the art on show, the gallery and the city in general. As for the exhibition, whilst I was somewhat sceptical about an exhibition titled ‘Beijing Abstract’ at first, it actually had some pretty incredible works to view. Finally, it’s also a great space in which to view art and a superb location. - mariasU6363KJ1 contributionI have been Here a few times with my husband. At first, my husband was not an art fan at all, but the relaxing atmosphere made him love it. He can Express himself through GREAT guidance of teachers Here. Also release pressure from work and develop his creativity.
The atmosphere is relaxing because the place is. Neat and tidy, you will see lots of master pieces hanged around and people around you would appreciate those together. Also teachers Have GREAT patience.
