My friend and I decided to spend the last day in Beijing shopping. We came across this activity on Trip Advisor and decided to sign up for it. Anson confirmed our tour the day before and was at our hotel the next day in time to start the day. He asked what our interests were and after some thought he laid out the plan of going to a tea market, Hong Qiao Pearl Market and Panjanyuan flea market. He offered to assist us with bargaining if and when necessary and sure enough we came out way ahead with every purchase. It helped that there were hardly tourists around because of the low season and vendors were desperate for customers.

We appreciated his ability to translate as we wouldn't have been successful in trying to understand what was said.

All in all if there was a rating of 10 I'd give Anson that!

This tour is a really useful way of navigating the huge and impressive 798. Linda was a well prepared, friendly, knowledgeable guide who led us through the most interesting galleries in the zone. 798 itself is well worth a full day for those interested in art. Most galleries are free to visit, while some charge a 5-10 RMB entrance fee.

On the day of our tour the Hutongs were rather crowded as it was summer vacation and there were student tour groups as well as construction works along the Houhai Lake. We have Cathy as our tour guide. Cathy is nice and energetic and she did a great job to ensure that we were well looked after notwithstanding the situation. Cathy is bubbly and is full of English jokes up her sleeves so there can never be a dull moment when you are with her. Thanks for a great tour Cathy!

For Art enthusiasts though a word of warning - do not expect too much from 798 Art Zone. It is a scattered collection of galleries and shops displaying various works of various standards. The Zone is not really well structured so how much you see depends on what you happen to come across. Personally I think the place needs a few years to develop and mature into a real attraction. Some galleries charge entry fees and do be careful - some of them are not really worth that fee (nor visit).
