What travellers are saying
- Paco V4 contributionsVery nice place to buy some souvenir from Egypt (fix prices, good prices, nice things). They don't push you to buy something if you don't want.
So i recommende!Written 20 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Kate OThe Hague, The Netherlands40 contributionsAmazing shop! They have the best selection of authentic papyrus, many different styles, reasonable prices and the staff can talk you through everything in English! Also packed my purchases very well so they did not get damaged in my suitcase travelling home. A real gem, will be back!Written 9 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- love to travel!New York City, NY45 contributionsRecommend if you want to buy small gifts to take and or interesting affordable art. Nice to avoid the khan el Khalili atmosphere and casually browse. They also hold art workshops for kids in the community.Written 5 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Dashers2014Cambridge, UK607 contributionsBe prepared to walk and that’s the only way to explore. Incredibly beautiful architecture. Lovely atmosphere too.Written 11 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- LoredanaCairo, Egypt43 contributionsIf you're visiting Cairo you need to take a walk through this Zamalek area. You'll be surprised what you can discover.
If you're into arts you must see the Zamalek contemporary art gallery, and discover national creators
It is well organised and they exibit great and important artworks.

We had a wonderful experience with him. We are an Australian family with four children. He has excellent English and a very solid knowledge of ancient Egyptology and also modern Egypt.
We initially wanted him to take us to Giza, but he suggested we first visit the older pyramids at Saqqarah and Dahshur. This was wonderful advice. We had an excellent tour of the oldest pyramids. It was a pleasant longer drive and along the way we were able to practice our Arabic phrases with Tamar. When we arrived we had the pyramids and tombs almost to ourselves (Egypt is very quiet for tourists right now - for obvious political reasons). We enjoyed Saqqarah and Dahshur much much more than Giza. (read the Trip Advisor reviews on these other sites).
Tamar also proved essential in helping us navigate and avoid all the scam artists - who were out in full force trying to target us. He even gave us coaching in haggling and in what was a reasonable price, as well as good advice in how tipping should work.
We were so happy that we booked Mr Tamar for a second day with our family two days later. He took us for a tour of Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo. These were also excellent, especially Coptic Cairo.
He is very well humoured, and our children loved his company and jokes. He was very flexible and sensitive to the needs of our children. He makes suggestions without being pushy. We always felt safe and enjoyed the things we did on these tours.
It is very hard to find a reliable good local guide in Egypt. We received a recommendation for Tamar Mina from two other contacts and we would highly recommend him for others.Written 1 May 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - taistealai_fanachLondon159 contributionsWe were here a lot a few years ago. It was busy then. It has gone from somewhere you had to be in the know to find, to handing out leaflets on the street. What changed?
Seemingly they expanded into the other side of the building, but then lost the other half to a rival. Are they taking all their business? Who knows. I didn’t see anyone going in there either.
This place deserves to be busier. The building is gorgeous, the space is gorgeous, in a ramshackle old belle epoque building complete with a noir filmic cage lift. The welcome is warm and the food is very nice. Gone are the pizzas that were a touch on the sweet side – good move. Everything we had was very nice indeed.
I had a perfectly serviceable negroni while perusing the menu. Good cocktails are not easy to come by in Cairo. My standards are high.
There was a very nice tomato sauce for dipping bread with the olives while we thought about what to eat. We shared an aubergine and halloumi skewer while we waited for the mains.
The meat-free main was risotto, so I went starters and sides instead. A baked aubergine, sweet potato mash and creamed spinach. All of which were good. Obviously it was way too much food so we left with a doggie bag. And it was still good the next day too – especially the sweet potato mash, which was better cold the next day than warm the night before for some odd reason.
Wine tends to be the same 6 Egyptian brands everywhere. Here the prices were very reasonable. We had the white Jardin du Nil and rosé Beausoleil and they did the job.
The bill for shared starter, two mains, two cocktails and 4 glasses of wine worked out at £28 p/h incl service. Not cheap for Cairo, but not bad for Zamalek.
Except that that’s not the end of it. The service charge apparently doesn’t cover actual service. Eh? The server doesn’t get the service charge. What – none of it? No. Don’t get me started. I’ve been a waitress, paid below the minimum wage in Thatcher’s Britain when you were not allowed to add service to the bill and managers’ stole your tips. This is rubbish, but it’s not the customers’ problem. When I’ve paid service charge of 10% added to the bill, I expect to be making this up to 15% for good service, not adding 15% to it (ie service charge of 25%!) because the server is not being paid properly!
Tourists are a bit of a rarity in Cairo at the moment so foreigners who are there would be forgiven for feeling like the goose that laid the golden egg. Gets on your nerves after a while. Locals don't appreciate travellers acting like charitable organisations either as it distorts the market for them too. That said, this was the only restaurant where this happened.
An awkward end to otherwise very pleasant proceedings. But don't let it put you off. Just go with resolve to pay what you expected to pay and you'll be fine. Really the place is lovely. Better than it was a few years ago. We were just caught unawares, a bottle of wine down.Written 19 May 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - mamat122963Excelsior, MN280 contributionsWe stumbled upon this while out walking this evening. We were able to enjoy the gardens, building and the 19th/20th century artwork inside. It was a quiet respite from the busyness of Cairo. And the views of the Nile were lovely too.Written 18 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Sandra KHealdsburg, CA91 contributionsMy husband and I shopped in the Sami Amin store in Maadi and bought a number of lovely items. We purchased a unique briefcase, and several very creative belts. The prices are good compared to those in the US, but high for Egypt. That said, the items in the Sami Amin stores are one of a kind, handmade artworks that can be purchased no where else. The leather quality is good and better than most we saw throughout the country. But if you are looking for butter soft leather, you still won't find it here. Most Egyptian leather is rather hard, but probably quite durable.
Shop at Sami Amin for unusual, hand made gifts you won't find anywhere else.Written 2 April 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Gamal ECairo, Egypt3 contributionsWas wander full time I found all what I need and also the teem work have a great help me to select what I needWritten 5 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
