Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- robyn rMelbourne, Australia280 contributionsA fascinating excursion of these scenically beautiful islands which saw unfathomable violence and cruelty. Our tour guides were excellent, and we learnt about this place where so many suffered and tried to escape (papillon). An added bonus was seeing some monkeys and a cute agouti.Written 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LuckySpiveyAtlanta, GA1,028 contributionsIt’s hard to understand why France would take paradise and turn it into a prison, but that’s what they did to this picturesque island. The remains of the prison (think Papillon) still stand as a testament to that stark reality.
There are a great many monkeys - careful they come right up to you. There are also peacocks - I could hear other birds but never saw any parrots, which are supposed to live on the island. The scariest are the abundant Agouti (rat like creatures).
Careful of the terrain. The path is made from very uneven stone, but the stairs are worse. I would suggest using a walking stick for either.
The only place to get a drink or use the bathroom is the hotel at the top of the island. They take euros and credit cards only when their internet connection is working.Written 1 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
