I liked Mahane Yehuda more than some of the other markets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It was wider so much easier to walk through and a little less chaotic. I did not view it as a tourist trap. Yes, it was a good place for tourists but it was also a good place for Israelis to shop for food and household needs. It was also near Jaffa St and Ben Yehuda which are also good shopping areas. I actually was unable to find some of the touristy souvenir items I was looking for. I wanted to purchase some spices and found that even when you say a specific amount, you will be given far more than you want. Be ready to bargain and tell the vendor that you don't want so much. You will not be insulting them because this is how they do business.

worthy of a few hours to explore and shop! you won't be able to escape the shops anyways since they are on your way to anywhere you want to go inside the Old City. lots of stuff to buy, but, as our first taxi driver warned us, you've got be tough in bargaining (cut the offering price in half!), or prepare to pay a lot more since these shop-owners are pros of the pros :-) even if you don't intend to buy anything, it's a pleasant walk if you got the time, and many little snacks to try (i.e. tea and pomegranate juice)

The mall underwent renovation this past summer. It still offers a variety of stores and the food court still offers all kinds of kosher food, An addition has been the Friday market, One can go from one cart to another buying kosher delicacies for the Sabbath

In the center of Jerusalem it is possible to find a quiet place with a great museum and a restaurant.
It was the home of Anna Ticho and her husband a known eye doctor.
It was good that the place was kept and not converted in the high rising buildings as many in the area.
Even the garden was saved and the gallery as part of the Israel Museum has a permanent exhibition and also temporary exhibits of Israel artist.
The resturant was located in a upper floor, mainly of italian food.
It is also a coffee place to enjoy at all time.
It is possible also to have small group celebrations in a separate room.
The elevator to get to the third floor is small and not always work what is a problem for elderly people. It should be consider to fix it.

We popped in here yesterday and now I see why others keep coming back here! I’m heading back tomorrow as he is opening the kiln and I need a little piece to bring home with me. Beautiful colours and designs and quality. So diff than what is sold everywhere in markets and on a large mass.

My wife and I have visited Israel many times. We always stay in Tel Aviv, but travel to Jerusalem by bus for a day. This artists co-op is a short cab ride from the bus station and a nice walk to the old city. Everything in the store is hand made from artists in Israel. The prices are more than fair and the customer service is incredible. We have purchased both in person and on line and have always been 100% satisfied. I can't recommend this shop enough.

it faces the Old City in what was no man's land between 1948-67 (and still has signs of it).

The building itself was constructed between 1927-30 as a wing of St. John's Eye Hospital by architect Clifford Holliday (who also built nearby St. Andrew's Church of Scotland). A tunnel under Hebron Road once connected it to the hospital's first building, today the Mt. Zion Boutique Hotel.

In an eclectic style with oriental influences, it boasts an airy central courtyard surrounded by three floors of some 24 glass-fronted artists' studios and a ground floor exhibition hall. Special features:
    * Armenian Tile Room by ceramic artist David Ohannessian
    * crests of Scottish nobility - hospital patrons - in the courtyard
    * facsimile of 2,700-year-old silver scroll of the Priestly Blessing in ancient Hebrew, found in an archaeological excavation between the House and St. Andrew's Church
    * second floor iron railing by sculptor David Palombo (known for Knesset Gates).

    Best to visit between 10:00-13:00.

    In easy walking distance of:
Old Train Station, Khan Theatre, St. Andrew's Church of Scotland, Lions Fountain/ Bloomfield Garden, Jerusalem Cinematheque, Menahem Begin Museum, Mishkenot Sha'ananim, Yemin Moshe.

A number of years ago, we made our first 'real' art purchase at this gallery with the wonderful patience and help of gallery owner Gabriel Knafo. We couldn't afford what we really wanted, and Gabriel calmly worked closely with us so that we could end up with something nonetheless. He told us it would have to be made for us and it would be sent to us in Los Angeles, framed and boxed. A number of weeks later, just as he said, the piece arrived and we were in possession of that first original, "real" art piece on our wall. Fast forward a number of years and we were back in the gallery on a subsequent visit, admiring the art, enjoying catching up with Gabriel and . . . with Gabriel's patient guidance, purchase #2 was made. Just like the first time, the piece was sent to us framed and boxed, in perfect condition. Fast forward a number of years and once again, we found ourselves back in the gallery, and even though we have been in many other galleries in the counry, on this visit, we worked with Gabriel to purchase a collection of smaller pieces to adorn our dining room and just as occured previously, they arrived in perfect condition when he said they would arrive. In this case, we needed time to make this purchase, and Gabriel gave us the time and space we needed before we actually made the purchase (which we didn't make until long after returning home). Gabriel is a classy guy with the integrity and honesty that makes working with him so pleasurable. It is a blessing to have beautiful art from Israeli artists in our home, and it is equally a blessing to be able to do business with someone as patient, knowledgelable, and personable as Gabriel. If you want to browse a great gallery, don't miss this one.
