The scents of street food wafted through the air, tempting us to try everything. While it was crowded, the energy of the place made it all worthwhile. - James OCork, Ireland1,090 contributionsWe visited mid-morning to avoid the tour crowds, and I would suggest the earlier the better, so as to experience the displays with the level of solitude it requires.
I was astounded by the number of people who wouldn't pay a paltry fee for the self guided audio headset as it added so much clarity to the experience.
It was shocking to see how a supposedly civilised country such as France treated their fellow humans, but then again, how many empires behaved in such a manor ? and how many countries still are today ?
The displays were well laid out and numbered for ease of understanding with the audio headset.
I realise that this is Vietnam's story to tell, however, I thought it was a little cheapened by the constant maintenance of the party line through the French area when human emotion must have been to the fore of the poor Vietnamese, and the assertion that, in general, the American POWs were treated with such gentleness and compassion during that conflict. Obviously, the pictures and displays are authentic, however, I imagine selective portrayal was extensively used.
I thought the narrative was weigted unnecessarily heavily in one direction, as what I assume would be a more accurate portrayal, would certainly be understandable to most people today.
For me, both the story and site were lessened a little by such.
I'm glad I went and would recommend a visit to anyone visiting Ha Noi.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I noticed a few people openly sobbing ??? Honestly, we spent hours there and could have stayed longer. Definitely a must-see, even if you're not usually into museums. - LouiseAustralia167 contributionsIf the experience didn’t feel like I was in North Korea this would be a 5 star attraction! If you’re in Hanoi this is a must but BE PREPARED! We have been to many religious sites and know about dressing modestly etc, my male partner was caught out for wearing shorts, we went across the road and got a pair of pants for about $5 AUD, no worries. We then got into the line with every other person local and tourists, to be screened by security more than the airports! Don’t bring any bottles of water or any big cameras, they will all be taken, cameras will be stored - to top it all off we get inside after the escapade of security and pants and see other people inside IN SHORTS!! As we go through the area we are marched in 2 straight lines for 40minutes! And might I mention no phones, photos or cameras - that’s fine totally respect it but honestly it was over the top and a double standard, tourists were being targeted and further only tourists have to pay. A small fee I know, but the negative attitude toward tourists put a slight damper on the whole thing!
Nevertheless seeing the preserved body was amazing and such a feat, the communist influence throughout was very interesting to see and it was awesome to stand where many great political leaders have stood before!

It was located near to a very busy roundabout. Can see that the building had a lot of history. There was a cafe located right at the side of the opera house as well where we got some breakfast and coffee. Nice place to visit, away from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi centre. The Pagoda lasted 2 World Wars and a piece of Hanoi history. Went for a walk along the bridge about 1km then turned back. The path felt like it was not a path and now and then we had to get on the road to carry on. You could see through the board, sometimes wobbly ones, right through to the bottom. We enjoyed it. Scenery was something we would not have seen otherwise. Some interesting things below the bridge not in built up areas.
