What travellers are saying
- Sue MWilliamsburg, VA1,561 contributionsHa Long Bay is why you come to Hanoi. As part of our Viking Mekong river cruise, we added on an extension so that we could travel to Ha Long Bay - we spent a glorious afternoon on the Bay in December 2024. Truly lucky to have a sunny day with temperatures in the '70's. Guide told us often it is cloudy, overcast or rainy. What was also nice was that the Bay was not crowded, there were other boats in the Bay but it was very calming and relaxing.Written 16 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sterling ShinerJaipur, India3 contributionsIf you have the opportunity, a 3-day, 2-night boat journey allows you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of this World Heritage site. This extended trip provides ample time to truly appreciate its grandeur and soak in every detail of this remarkable destination.Written 2 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Usia2014Calgary, Canada1,953 contributionsThere were many steep stairs to climb just to get to the cave entrance. It’s huge inside and quite tall so you don’t have to crouch anywhere. On the more narrower parts of the stairs there were no handrails so people were using the sides of the walls to hold onto to stay safe. These worn out walls were smooth and shiny from being overused where a railing would have been helpful.
In many sections of the cave there are various colourful lights projected on the rock formations. Some looked like a scene from a movie. It was very interesting. However, we were told to be out in 30 minutes by our tour boat so we really felt rushed in here and would have liked some more time to explore and enjoy it.
Yes, we had to watch our footing on the often wet stairs and cave floors. Leaving the cave, we had to go up a lot more stairs and then down again on more stairs. It became gruelling and we were not informed in advance about the number of stairs! This is not a place for anyone with mobility issues.
Other caves that we have visited in the past, were all very cool inside. However, this cave was quite warm and humid. We were there in the late morning when the temperature outside was still not too hot. When we got to the pick up point, there were very steep and narrow stairs at the water’s edge to go down to the the shuttle boat that took us to the Symphony cruise boat. Those types of stairs were also on other islands and made it feel very unsafe in getting on and off the islands.
We’re glad we saw this massive cave, but there is no need to return to see it again.Written 5 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Its one of the small limestone islands, which has been substantially developed so its got a dock for the tender boats, a nice beach, and a set of steps to the summit to offer a great viewing point across the bay. Also plenty of vendors selling ice creams, cans of soft drinks etc at reasonable prices.
The climb to the top is well worth it - the steps seem pretty well constructed and you have a guide rail / rope to hold onto for just about the whole ascent. It was packed at the top with fellow tourists (similar to the whole island) but you'll get your chance to take some good pics.
The beach was also busy, but you will find space to sit down, to have a swim in the sea, or to join in the beach activities of volleyball or soccer. Our teenage son had great fun practicing headers and volleys with the local Vietnamese tourists and tour guides who were very welcoming.Written 18 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Emma1 contribution3 of us all went on the 3 day 2 night tour. We all had a great time and met so many friends that we ended up catching up with multiple times after the tour. Would highly recommend this tour if your solo and wanting to make friends quick and easily. No wifi for 3 days meant everyone was always talking and socializing. The food is pretty average but the drinks are dirt cheap. Expect to have sand though everything by the end off the tour. Unfortunately the showers were also cold. The staff were great however were not as involved as you would expect. Overall had an amazing 3 days and would 100% recommend to those who love to party.Written 26 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stuart CooperPuerto Varas, Chile19 contributionsDid the two day one night trip.Note you start around noon and finish around noon the following day. The boat travels through some of the islands, beautiful, then anchors before picking up anchor the following day to return. Whilst at a chor there are various excursions. Food accommodation and crew excellent what I saw was beautiful. Would do two one day excursions next time. One way or the other I would not miss.Written 8 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ic chenHsinchu, Taiwan135 contributionsThis is the next stop right after our Halong bay cruise. The cable car ride to get to the complex was quite interesting-- as it passed a 188m point, a world-record. The ride on the big wheel, the main attraction, was great -- got to see the beautiful bay as well as the Halong city. Can spend some time to stroll around the Japanese garden too.Written 5 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BuiAnhHalong Bay, Vietnam5 contributionsI have to say that it was so crowded when I came there. It's hard to find a quiet place for sunbathing! - ShannonMelbourne, Australia1,167 contributionsThe mountains officially closed and rightly so unless you're a law breaker than attempt it at your own risk. So the old lady was supposedly the safest way to get up there because she's behind the wall or something. All you need to do is walk through her blue door and her dog will alert her. Don't worry the dogs are harmless and there's more dogs on the roof around five of them. As soon as she saw me she said it cost 500k, after you pay she takes you to the back on the roof. It didn't look that difficult until I had to lift an unstable ladder up the hillside then position it up against a 4 metre cliff. Which she indicated you had to climb over. Once seeing how dangerous it was I told her I wasn't going to do it and gave her 200k for wasting her time as she's quite elderly. Overall a brilliant mountain just a shame it's closed off. Recommend waiting for it to officially reopen and that you should visit other mountains.Written 28 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,856 contributionsThese are two rocks emerging from the sea, however with an interesting form of two chicken fighting or kissing.
