Located in the very center of old town Chiang Mai, this is the absolute best Temple in entire municipality.
Wat Chedi Luang means Big Chedi, and it's quite understandable why's so called once you enter the Temple grounds.
First you enter a magnificent Temple with golden standing Buddha statue. When exiting, behind it you'll stumble upon a massive brick Chedi. It used to be 90m tall being the tallest in Thailand, but an earthquake demolition decreased it to 60m - still a very impressive site.
To the right are learning and living monk quarters with a library.

Among many temples within the Chiang Mai old town, we found Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang Varavihan being the best two.
Wat Phra Singh is on the western side of old town. It's an old richly decorated Temple dating back to 14c with several golden stupas. Amazing colors during our night visit just after sunset.

Wat Pha Lat is a beautiful Temple nested in Chiang Mai western hills, half way from downtown to Wat Doi Suthep which is on the top. Therefore I suggest visiting both temples at the same time.
Wat Pha Lat is a very serene and tranquil Temple set in the woods, and is also known as the Hidden Temple. It's calmer and less visited than others which makes your visit more enjoyable. It dates back to Lanna period and is located around a small waterfall, with a monastery attached as well.
You can reach it in 20 min taxi ride or take a hike through the woods.

Chiang Mai has many Temples in its old town, as well scattered around in the mountains. I suggest visiting this one, which is in the western mountains, reachable within half an hour drive from downtown.
It's a magnificent Temple with many Buddha statues - sitting, standing and reclining. Besides, it offers great city views beneath you from the viewing terrace.

We attended the one-day retreat hosted by Phra KK. He was a well-experienced monk who presented in a wholly entertaining way! We learnt the basics of Buddhism and meditation through meditation practice and an interactive presentation given by KK. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone with an interest in Buddhism and Thai culture whilst in Chiang Mai!!!

Visited here on Monday, 4 November 2024. A very unique "cave temple" to visit and explore in Chiangmai.

Interesting small tunnels inside this cave temple where you can explore the various Buddha statues. If lucky, you might see some bats flying inside the cave.

Outside the cave, there's some historical Buddha statues in the main ground. Also, there's a stairs leading up to the Chedi.

what an amazing place , apart from the pure white stupa's this is an active Buddhist university, and we got the chance to spend time alone with a teacher (over over 30 years experience) who described in detail Buddhism and its various paths particularly Theravada which is the from followed in Thailand and one of the purest forms.
as someone who has often considered following Buddhism this made my mind up, DON'T miss the chance to learn more.

This was such an aesthetically beautiful site containing Wat Phan Tao. Many photo ops for the socials here.

The row of bells with red parasols is particularly lovely as is the blindingly brilliant gold stupa.

Absolutely beautiful place. Peaceful, insiring, very green. The team of Foreign Meditation Office is so dedicated, serving, full of love and kindness! Machi Selea and Pra Sukhito will remain in my heart forever as most kind and loving persons....they really just serve people unselfishly. I did my 3 weeks meditation course and full of gratitude to all of those whom I met in WRP and to the place itself. May you all be happy and free of suffering!

Just a short and easy stroll from the Three Kings statue, you'll find War Sadeu Mueang.

You may say "what wat is what?" after visiting Thailand but each temple is truly unique in architecture and decoration. Enjoy the art and the tranquility.

This is another impressive temple right outside Chiang Mai's historic walled city. Wat Mahawan is a neat structure that reminds visitors of the past glory of the Lanna kingdom. Worth a look while exploring the Thai city.
