Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Most of the fortress was only built in the 1960’s. The function of the building is part administrative part religious. It hosts government departments on one side of the compound with the temple on the opposite side. The building has impressive scale although access in limited to evenings during the week and all-day weekends and public holidays. Unfortunately, most of the complex is out of bounds apart from the courtyard and main temple.

We visited the memorial during our visit to thimpu in nov 2024.

the place is having a entry fee for adults and kids.

the memorial is beautiful and has a nice surrounding lawn. the inside is having multiple levels and large multi layered statues.

we have to climb upstairs to have a look at all the sculptures and paintings on all the levels.

the memorial lawn is a nice place to take good photos with the city and mountains in the background.

overall a must visit place in thimpu , bhutan.

The only access to the monastery founded in the 17th century is up a quite steep path from a road below that takes about an hour with stops along the way. The walk takes you through a lovely forest that gives you an occasional glimpse of the steep valley below. Prayer flags line much of the route. The main monastery site has now been fully restored and once inside the courtyard, you can get access to the main temple. The decoration of the external walls when viewed from the courtyard is particularly impressive.
It is worth asking your guide to also take you to the upper Gomba that is reached by ascending several flights of (unguarded) steep stone steps. The first room is a communal meditation centre but beyond this is an inner temple that contains the ashes of the founders’ father and some of the wall decoration here is original. At the time of our visit a sole monk was performing the Buddhist mantra.
This is a beautiful peaceful place understandingly given prominence as a meditation retreat.

This monastery is known as an astrological center typical of the Lamaist Buddhism. The natal astrological charts can be made here for a fee, and if someone does not have "good karma" the monks can also perform several purifying ceremonies to ensure someone's spiritual growth in this dimension to some extent. The whole story that our tour guide told us was impressive.
When we visited this monastery complex, the main temple was closed due to the restoration. At the special request of our tour guide, the monks allowed us to enter a small temple where protective deities typical of Lamaist Buddhism are housed.

This was the place where Zhabdrung first arrive and settled after he came from Tibet in 1616 when he was 20 years old.
He built the temple there and named it as dzong but later 1629 after he built a much bigger dzong/fort then he removed the name dzong and named it as a Lhakhang only meaning a temple.
There is a stupa inside the first floor of the temple which holds the sacred relics of Zhabdrung's father Yab Tenpai Nima.

We were fascinated by this place. This is also a monastery school for the young monks, located not far from the Bhutanese parliament building. Together with the local guide, we entered the main temple room, where the young monks were chanting the mantras under the watchful eye of the older monks. We will never forget this experience!

This nunnery is rather recent, located just outside of Thimpu and, although it is peaceful and quite and it is, overall, a nice visit, I would not rush there if your schedule is already packed with other places to go to which might be more interesting.

This temple really impressed us. The temple is very well preserved, as it is one of the few temples and monasteries that were not destroyed by fire. The frescoes typical of the Lamaist Buddhism can be seen on the walls. The statues on the main altar are also a great traditional and artistic treasure of Bhutan.
Despite everything, we were most impressed by the conversation with the head abbot, who is a simple and wise person. We will never forget his advices.

Tashigang Goenpa is a hidden gem, perched on a hill with sweeping views of the surrounding landscapes. The tranquility of the monastery and its traditional Bhutanese architecture create a serene atmosphere, offering visitors a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the spiritual essence of Bhutan

I have taken two fabulous tours with Bhutan Takin Tours, the first in September of 2015 and a second in February of 2023. I cannot express how exceptional their service was. Kinlay Gyaltchen, the owner and lead guide, is without a doubt one of the top tour guides in Bhutan, especially for well-traveled Americans with high expectations for service and learning.

Kinlay is highly educated and extremely experienced - having led walking tours for Backcountry Walkers for 11 years - he is very well known and respected in Thimphu and in other parts of Bhutan as well.

He immediately fixed any problem that arose, whether a minor medical issue or where to buy a reasonably priced thangka. He ensured that every destination, every meal, and every accommodation met or exceeded my expectations. Kinlay designed both of my tours to provide me with an ideal balance of culture and nature, of comfort and activity.

Kinlay and his son Tashi both possess a wonderfully wry and self-deprecating sense of humor, and both understand American culture very well. Their English, by the way, is perfect. I was always entertained with these two, and never left with an unanswered question, no matter how obtuse. Kinlay and Tashi both go out of their way to maximize one's appreciation of Bhutan's incredible natural and cultural legacy, and in the process, both became lifelong friends. I feel very fortunate to have had both of these gentlemen as my guides in this amazing country. Don't be put off by the fact that his business is small, or by his minimalist website. You cannot do better than Bhutan Takin Trails!
