Had a wine tasting with 6-7 wines. They were all good and the introduction was excellent. The cellar is indeed an old cellar so it was quite cosy to be there.

My family visited the König Pince winery in Budafok for a wine tour, which was offered by Budapest Bike Breeze Tours. Our English-speaking guide, Akos, picked us up at our apartment in Pest with his van, and drove us to the winery outside of Buda. We opted for a tour of the cellars, with a luncheon meal that included tastings of seven [7] different wines. The tour was very reasonably priced.

After we finished our tour through the underground cellars, we sat down in the cellar to a fabulous meal of spiced pickles, warm bread, ham knuckle, broken potatoes with fried onions, and a delicious dessert. Our party of six [6] family members was totally impressed by the quality of the food and the wine. With red linen tablecloths, pottery dishes, wine glasses, old-fashioned seltzer water bottles, and candles, the room had a true fairyland feel! Wines included two whites, a red Bikavér, a Rosé, a spiced wine, and some white wine that had been taken out of a barrel and served from a wine thief. The meal ended with a very nice, sweet Tokaji served with our dessert.

Zoli was the wine master and chef for the day. Our guide, Akos, translated Zoli’s comments, and we had a most enjoyable afternoon feast!

When we finished our luncheon, we had the opportunity to purchase wine directly from the winery. The prices were unbelievably reasonable! Most of the wines were priced at approximately 800 forints, or about $3.50 US/CAN per bottle! Be sure you pack quite a few bubble-wrap pouches and rolls of packing tape so you can take home some of this fantastic wine in your check-in luggage.

After we left the winery, Akos took us on a walking tour of the Village of Budafok. This was an unexpected bonus!

I would highly recommend this wine tour and winery…this was a highlight of my trip to Budapest.

It was a small church at one time but is now primarily a wine store, although our host said it is still sometimes used as a place for people to pray at the small alter. Alex, our host for the evening, was very knowledgeable about wine, albeit he took himself a bit too seriously. It was a delicious 4 course meal and the Hungarian wines were very good. We started with a sparkling white wine, very similar to a champagne. The first course was a salad of greens with Froie Gras, a goose liver pate. I had never tried it before, but it was very creamy and did not taste like liver. It was served with a rose. The next course was a slice of turkey for us, pork for everyone else, on a bed of vegetables. It was paired with another light red wine. The 3rd course was beef with a nice red blend wine. The final course was a selection of small pastries with a sweet white wine. The wine was very affordable so we bought 3 bottles.

The most amazing experience, it’s a shame if you don’t make a visit to this amazing place. The experience they have in wine is just excellent.
