Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just a couple of kilometres from the centre of Mt Gambier the Umpherston Sinkhole has been beautifully landscaped and there was a magnificent display of hydrangeas when we visited. There are easy stairs to the bottom of the sinkhole and whilst it is glorious during the day, it is worth going in the evening when the resident possums appear. They love to be fed, but fruit only - no bread please. The lawns surrounding the sinkhole are a great picnic spot too.

We discovered the playground here at side of lake by accident and how kids wanted to return every day. There is also an excellent lookout (marks lookout)

Mount Schank is an extinct volcano, pretty much the same in size as an active one I visited years ago in Tanna, Vanuatu.

The track to the top is very well constructed with concrete “logs” acting as steps. It works very well.

The view at the top was magnificent, out to sea as well as over farmland.

We walked the rim which took only half an hour. A great experience and well worth the climb.

So much more than a visitor centre. The free museum inside is fascinating with a map of local exploration, a video of a cave dive, exhibits about local geology and so much more. Definitely visit. The bonus is the ship outside

A fantastic place to view Valley and Blue Lake as well as Mount Gambier. The walk is quite steep, but all on a tar footpath. Unfortunately when we did it the tower was closed but still well worth the effort.

This is a very beautiful place to stop, in the middle of town. A short walk with a couple of lookout points. A few stairs but not to strenuous but not pram or wheelchair friendly. It also looks like a place that the locals like to throw excess rubbish and shopping trolleys in, which is a shame.

Great one-hour film (11am and 2pm) about the geoscience of the area- the volcanos & craters & sinkholes. Centre of town.

Entry to the Conservation Park was free. It's a great area for a stroll and, if time allows, for some birdspotting from the bird hide. Our first wildlife sighting was a snake basking in the sun on the grass! It did not move as we stopped for a photo and then strolled past. We saw about 5 kangaroos (being chased by some youngsters) and a small group of birds. The paths and board walks are clear and loop through the park. Worth a visit.

Since the demise of regional railways and the replacements of transport to trucks and road trains, a problem exists of what to do with the infrastructure in place. Mt Gambier have creatively solved their problem. The rail tracks had been lifted and the rail corridor replaced with a bicycle track combined with a walk/running track.

What was the Mt Gambier railway station and yards has been turned into the central hub of the creative plan. This valuable resource features an adventure playground not of commercial style but using natural and recycled materials. There is a large open amphitheater capable of use for relaxation but also for local community theatrical based events. A Railway Urban Wet Land has been included with fish and ducks populating the area. A BBQ/picnicking area established for family use with a native edible garden established next to the BBQ area.

Toilets are in the original signal box and the station is under renovation for further community innovation in the area.

I had heard of the development and was excited as being able to see what is possible with forethought and creative innovation. For other towns with a similar issue, the Mt Gambier solution is one that could be easily adapted. I would encourage travellers and locals to visit the Railway Lands and enjoy what Mt Gambier have every day!

Return? Yes would return to see what further developments have been made to the Railway Yards and in particular the old station itself.

This is a good regional art gallery but its key asset is the free regular film which it shows about the volcanic history of the area (especially pertinent given the number of sinkholes locally). The film lasts for about 45 minutes. The staff were very helpful about directions to other attractions in the locality. The shop had some interesting and quirky items for sale.
Its central location makes it easy to visit.

This Library seems to have so much going for it - not just the books, computers, meeting rooms, children's areas and also a cafe to enjoy a little food and drink whilst browsing on a magazine. What more could you need!

Found the markets on a rainy Saturday morning while exploring the sink hole. There wasn't much advertising for the markets so if we hadn't been at the sink hole we wouldn't have known
