- David BCanberra, Australia62 contributionsWhile visiting the amazing Orange region of New South Wales my wife and I took part in a tour organised by Country Food Trails. The first step was to visit the Ross Hill Winery and to go behind then scenes to view the winery operations and then to taste some of the local products.
The winery is beautifully appointed and presented. We were met by Isabel who should
be the poster girl for the Australian wine industry. She is a wine industry professional with loads of experience and charm. She took us through the operations of the winery and her deep knowledge was evident from the start. We got to see the barrel rooms, the pressing machinery while absorbing a host of information on the different types of wines grown in this diverse region. The local border collie also kept us amused with her antics.
We were then provided with a flight of wines for tasting guided by Belinda who is an expert on the wines and the histories associated with them.
I tasted a range of red wines and ended up buying a sample bottle of each as they were all delicious.

We have done quite a few wine tours and the biggest difference with this tour was how relaxing it was. We weren't rushed from one winery to another. We could take our time and enjoy each others company with beautiful wines and scrumptious cheese platters. Mark explained things about the area and wineries. We shared hay fried chicken, flatbreads, slow cooked chicken crown and collared pork with fermented rhubarb. Each plate was delightful and a true pleasure on the palate, all enjoyed with a bottle of Rowlee’s own Cab Sav -Merlot. Dessert was a little surprising, the gelato was excellent, the fennel it was served with took some getting used to.
In summary, excellent setting, food, service and value. The chef had been Michelin trained and the food was world class, paying homage to local ingredients and being super mindful of carbon footprint. Each dish was wonderful and the maître d’ Alessandro was highly knowledgeable and friendly.
