Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- AustTrailSydney527 contributionsA lovely beach to visit in Newcastle. It was very choppy the day we visited but it was still spectacular to see the surfers do their thing and see the powerful waves crash to shore.
The bluff near the baths have interesting rocks to look at if you are interested in geology. Observed a few fossils and the rock pool great for kids.Written 26 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom11,633 contributionsI really liked Bar Beach. It’s a very pretty, family-friendly, little beach with a beachfront cafe and a surf lifesaving club, and bounded on one side by a grassy headland. There were a lot of people and families spread out under their umbrellas and cabanas, wading in the shallow waters or milling around and drinking coffee at the Swell cafe, overlooking the beach.
Bar Beach is located at the far north end of a 1.3 km long stretch of sandy beach that includes Bar, Dixon Park, and Merewether beaches (although to the non-local like me, its hard to tell where one stops and another starts)
Nearer the headland, the water was quite shallow, with exposed rocky outcrops and . small children were able to splash around here easily.
One of the things I really liked about Bar beach was walking around the base of the headland to a large rocky platform where you can clamber around and explore the little rock pools. Lots of crabs, shellfish, seaweeds, limpets and sea squirts to discover here.
From a practical point, Bar Beach is very accessible, with a large car park right above the beach so you don’t have to cart beach chairs and bags very far at all.
It has all the facilities you’d expect of a popular beach, including toilets, change rooms, a kiosk, and it's patrolled all year round (not all beaches are).

NOTE: You can easily join the The Memorial Walking Trail from Bar Beach. Look for the blue staircase that winds its way up the headland and links up with the Memorial Trail.Written 5 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
