Abercrombie House is a magnificent looking house. The construction is a tribute to the builders of the time, as well as those who selected the materials for the building.
As the house is now occupied, not all of the rooms are accessible, but the house is so big, and there are so many rooms to visit, that this hardly matters.
We did find that the house was overly cluttered with souvenirs and mementos from the various family's travels and there was no pattern or theme to all the items in the house. It seems to be a random collection of items from around the world. It was a little more difficult to appreciate the inside of the house, the pictures of those who have lived or connected to the various residents of the home or how the house was home to various families in the time it has stood.
It's still well worth visiting for a glimpse into the early years of life in Bathurst and surrounds. The grounds of the home are beautiful and tell the story of how the more well to do lived in the past.
Abercrombie house is about 10 minutes or so from the centre of Bathurst, hidden away from the main highways and even the local roads.

The NMRM is located at the entrance to the great Mt Panorama race track. It looks like a small building from the front, but has a treasure trove or racing memories and history inside.
Whether it's motorbikes (racing since 1938!) or cars (since 1963), there's something here for you.
As someone who has watched the Bathurst 1000 since the early 70s, this was a real trip down memory lane. It also provided a few surprises looking at the winners of the first seven or eight years of car racing.
All the major winning vehicles are on display (either replicas or restorations) and it's amazing to think about some of the early winners and they cars they drove.
There are also some cars that have participated in the 12hr and 6hr events, as well as many of the major motorcycle races over the years. If you're a speedway fan, there are even some of those on display!
Even if you're not a motor racing fan, this will still be of interest just from a local history aspect.

The home of former Prime Minister Ben Chifley & his wife, Elizabeth has been maintained as it was when they were in residence. The education centre has some wonderful exhibits and information about the Chifley's, their families and life in the Bathurst region.
The home is only accessible with one of the guides via the education centre. Out guide, Lynette, has an extremely deep knowledge of the home and region. She also recommended Miss Traill's House following our visit here.
Life in the first half of the 20th century is clearly seen through visiting Chifley
Home. There are so many items either preserved or restored to give you the authentic feel of life in that time.
Learning about Mr &Mrs Chifley and their contributions to the local region, as well as Mr Chifley's contribution as our first post-WWII Prime Minister is a must for anyone who wants to know more about Australian history.
Very low entry fee (which is used to help maintain the houses) and a great place to take school aged children.

I was asked how did Bathurst go this year? My answer was it was conflicting! At least a Ford didn't win, was the first thing that came to mind as a Holden man. But the race is lacking that spark of years gone by! Having first visited in 1972 and over 40+ visits since the celebrations were muted to say the least. A huge crowd attended so space in the campsites & at the track were limited. Tree growth has finally covered up our view of the large TV screen, so following the progress was a bit harder then usual. Plus the food sources have been moved from Skyline and the choices were few. Not too sure if the Great Race will still be calling me in the future?

Miss Traill's house is a wonderful old home, preserved and managed by the National Trust. It is another time capsule to a time past, with the last resident having passed away in 1976. The house showcases how life was lived in a regional city by those of independent means.
The tour guides are knowledgable and share some amazing stories of the house and it's previous inhabitants.
Visiting hours are only on Sundays, as it is attended to by volunteers.
As one of several historical houses in the area, Miss Traill's House is a must see for anyone interested in the local history of Bathurst.
